Excellent!

An unfortunate effect of Apple's iPhone developer agreement--
interpreters are not allowed.

texting while driving is REALLY STUPID. (Heck, texting anytime,
doesn't make sense to me when the same device allows you to talk.)
But talking? How is _talking_ on a cell phone more dangerous
than talking to your passenger, or listening to talk radio, or ....
Anyone incapable of driving safely while talking should not be
allowed to drive a car with a radio or a cup holder.
Would we be accused of discriminating against the handicapped
if we disallowed people from communicating in sign language
to a deaf driver? Yes, I've seen drivers in motion staring
at their passenger who's signing away.
Nearly 25 years ago, I saw an advert for a 24x80 ASCII terminal
that you could wear on your head to read while driving!
How about the vans where if the driver leans way back,
he can watch a movie on the DVD player that's allegedly for the back
seat only?

I accept the data. I personally find it very distracting to try and drive
while getting an MRI... |

How did they measure it? Or did they just make it up?
Did they specifically state that they had measured reaction
times while talking to a passenger and found them significantly different?

I can believe it. Where I have my doubts is the apparent claims that
cell phones distracgt and nothing else does.

Yeah, right. They built a special P.E.T. scanner that can be used
while driving just so they could measure this. Not only that, but
this scanner can tell the difference between two kinds of brain
activity.

Since I work in healthcare AND my wife has had a dozen
for her cancer care, I am aware that an MRI cannot measure
brain activity. It detects differences between different
types of tissue.

I'll have to read the researcher's report. The MRI nonsense
makes it obvious at best the journalist is sloppy, at worst
the researcher is blowing smoke.

Paying attention? Oh, sorry, I was on the phone, what did you say?
I've seen plenty of anecdotal evidence. What I am not yet quite
convinced of is the hypothesis that the problems correlate to the
cell phone and not to the idiocy of the user. The article cited,
however, does give a credible hypothesis for why a cell phone
could be worse than a passenger.
