Are you arguing Apple did not introduce a $99 iPhone?

Only if you are a complete idiot.

AT&T's early termination fee starts at $175 and is lowered $5 for every
month for the term of the contract:

(for those too stupid to use a news client that properly handles wrapped
URLs, and too stupid to figure out how to put them together for viewing:

So the OP would pay $170 to terminate his new contract, and then the
price of a new iPhone 3GS with a new plan, $199, for a total of $369. Or
perhaps he would decide a iPhone 3G is enough and only pay $99 more, for
a total of $269.

Both of those figures are significantly less than $600.

Or an honest one...

What you suggest below is certainly gaming the system. You're leveraging
AT&T's standard one-size-fits-all-phones EFT vs. their abnormally high
iPhone subsidy.

Plus activation fee (still $36?), and first month's service ($40 minimum,
assuming a $10 family plan add-on plus mandatory data, rather than the $70
mnimum for a new line.)

> Or
> perhaps he would decide a iPhone 3G is enough and only pay $99 more, for

The OP didn't opt for a 3G the first time, so why should he, or our
hypothetical strawman, opt for one now?

If we add the $75 or so activation and service to the subsidized price plus
term fee we're at nearly $450. It may not be the full $600, but it's a
damn sight closer to $600 than "$99."

And, whether you gaming the system or not to save the buck-fifty, $600 is
still the official AT&T unsubsidized price for non-elligible upgrades,
($700 for the 32GB:)

<http://www.wireless.att.com/learn/internet/iphone-faq.jsp>

Therefore, it can legitimately be described as a "$600 phone," Q.E.D.

Or, put another way: whose value estimation, and supporting argument, will
_you_ use with _your_ insurance company if your 3GS is ever lost or stolen?

Pffft. He would pay that regardless since he already had a phone for
those two months. It doesn't figure into the equation. We're comparing
the price of the phones, not the service.

Nope. Try harder. We expect better.

You've got to be kidding me. I talked with an AT&T representative who
recommend that I do exactly this when I inquired about trading my 3G for
a 3GS. It's a perfectly acceptable, and quite common, practice. Get real.

You'd pay for the service anyway with your old phone. Nice try.

Works fine in most well-behaved news readers, actually. And besides,
anyone with half a brain cell can figure out how to make it work
manually.

Not inclusive of the ability to use it as intended they did not.

Do you argue otherwise?

Fine. It's still gaming the system. If AT&T wanted you to have a $450
unsubsidized iPhone 3GS, why did they set the no contract price at $600
instead of $450?

Again, assuming the original still-under-contract phone is
lost/stolen/whatever, you'd have TWO services to pay for- the original
phone's (still under contract, remember?) and the activation fees and first
month service for the new phone you're activating just to cancel it 31 days
later. Two services, not one.

Try again...

*shrug* That goes for *any* similarly-priced smart phone. Big whoop.

Nobody cares - not even AT&T themselves. Except you, apparently.

Nope. When you terminate the previous contract, you no longer need to
pay monthly charges for it. That's the point.

Todd Todd

Kill the old plan for$175
Buy new 3GS for $199 an up
Sell the old broken one for $199 for shipment overseas.

Net cost about $175 +$38 for a new AT&T account not $600 which is a
figure you pulled out of the air (or you ass).

Works every day for someone who wants a new phone after breaking it
during the first month. It gets cheaper each month you own the iPhone
as the termination fee is prorated over the 24 months.

Says an Apple fan boy troll who says that an iPhone costs $150.

It would be funny if it were not so sad.

Fine. So... How much does an iPhone cost in your silly opinion,

Right, NoBrain... You think that your tiny little MacWorld is
where standards are made.

So now your going to change your phone number as well to save a few bucks?

Ok... Given that scenario, I'll conceed the extra service fees to you, (but
not the activation- you'll still be activating the new line) _if_ you can
assure me AT&T will let you cancel an old account while simulataneously (or
soon after) opening a new one.

For example, my carrier, T-Mo, won't let you. Any new line you activate
with 90 days of terminating an old one is automatically considered
reinstating the old line, and therefore ineligible for a discounted handset,
so to "game" T-Mo this way, you need to activate a new line to get the
discounted equipment then cancel the new line. AT&T used to have a similar
policy back when they were Cingular, but I haven't been with them since the
merger.
