All,
My Motorola V3 Battery doesn't seem to hold a charge for longer than
20 minutes, and I am looking at having it replaced. However, I notice
that my battery is a 3.6v, model SNN5696B, while the most popular
replacements out there seem to be the 3.7v SNN5696A. Can anyone tell
me if they know if the 3.7v is an ok replacement? Even better, is there
documentation for this as well? Thanks.

You needn't worry, they are exactly the same. In fact, I have two
SNN5696B batteries in front of me. One is white and says 3.6 volts and
the other is the newer black one and says 3.7 volts. The new number for
the battery is BR50. Both provide 710ma. Individual litium ion cells
produce 1.25 volts. The phone battery contains 3 cells. 3 x 1.25 = 3.75
volts. However, cell output is typically listed as 1.2 volts, or 3.6 for
the whole battery. So, as you can see, the 3.6 vs. 3.7 rating is due to
rounding. In any case, a tenth of a volt is meaningless as the battery
actually starts out at 4.2 volts when fully charged and drops to about
3.0 before shutting off the phone (I've measured this with a meter).
Under normal usage the batteries should last about a year before needing
replacement.

Do a search on ebay for "br50" and you'll find them for about $10 each
delivered.

You're thinking of nickel-based cells. Depending on chemistry, lithium
ion cells have a voltage of 3.24 to 4.10 volts per cell.

Does the range stated affect whether or not I can use the 3.7v battery?
My current battery is only 6 months old, and for some reason discharges
completely after about 20 minutes of talk time. I am going to test if
it's the battery by replacing it with a 3.7v battery. Your help is
appreciated.

Thanks.

Voltage differences between these (e.g. 3.6 vs 3.7) are inconsequential.
What matters is the capacity of the cell in milliamp-hours; and OEM
manufacturers seldom label their batteries to reflect that.

Joe, You can absolutely, positively use the battery marked 3.7 volts.
The battery is the same part number as the 3.6 volt and even if there
were a difference, one tenth of a volt is meaningless. When fully
charged the battery is actually at 4.2 volts. The phone has built in
regulation. Stop worrying and get yourself a new battery.
