When Sprint announced that they were offering $15/month PAM (Phone as a
Modem), I called them up right away to add it to my plan.
As I assumed, it was too good to be true. In order to get the $15 PAM
added to my phone, I also had to add a $30 Vision PRO pack.
Total costs to add usable data to my phone: $45/month aka $540/year
Well, this was a little much for me to swallow, so I passed on the offer.
Well tonight, I tried pairing my laptop to my phone and dialing (#777)
out just for fun. Much to my surprise it actually worked!
Is sprint now allowing pay-as-you-go PAM connections? When I asked them
about this before, they said that they would not allow pay-as-you-go PAM
because folks would rack up large data bills so quick that it wouldn't
be worth the billing frustration to offer it. This was sad to me, as I
understand the per KB data pricing, and would just like to have it
available in a pinch.
Is this just a glitch on my account, or can other folks also do
pay-as-you-go PAM without a PAM contract on their phone.

I believe most people can do pay-as-you-go-PAM. But check your current bill
on Sprint.Com. In all likelihood you are being charged per kB. If you have
an older phone and already had a regular Vision plan, you might be getting
lucky and be "flying under the radar" -- using PAM even though you're not
actually paying for it as such. (This is technically a violation of your
contract terms of service and Sprint *might* choose to drop you as a customer
for it, but if you read through the archives here you'll see this usually only
happens if you start "excessively" using it -- e.g., more than 1GB/month .)

Thanks for your response Joel. I have a newer phone that has the dual
NAI. When I first got the phone, a little less than a year ago, I could
surf on the handset, but when I would try to dial-up over Bluetooth, I
would get a login error.
Handset vision data usage is currently showing up on the Sprint website,
but the PAM testing I have done has yet to show up.
I used to have one of the older non dual NAI phones, so I know of the
under radar tethering that you speak of. The current phone I am using is
definitely dual NAI, so Sprint can tell when I am tethering, and when I
am surfing on the phone. It will be interesting to see what my next bill
says for data usage charges.
I currently don't have any data plans on the phone, but now I am tempted
to add the $15 vision plan just to see if it absorbs the cost of my
occasional new found tethering capability.

Sprint's always had more of a clue about this kind of thing than Verizon. And
I can speak with a little more authority on the subject than you can. At least
I was a customer from 2000-2005 (the first four years, my wife was on Sprint
while I was on VZW; the last year, we were both on Sprint). You NEVER were.
So please pull your pants back up and stop talking out of your ass. This
is almost as bad as hearing some of your pronouncements about T-Mo. You've
never used them either, yet you apparently know more about their policies than
I do, and I'm a current T-Mo customer.
Please try to remember that you *don't* know everything.
