EV-DO that same as wireless internet?

Sorry, I meant to say 'high speed internet' in my original message. So they
are the same thing I guess.

I am going to get the E815 on or after Oct. 5 (when my 'new every two' kicks
in).. I wonder if I'll have to extend my contract too? If I do, that's ok
since I don't plan on leaving VZW anytime soon. I've been with them since
1994 when I got my first Motorola bagphone..

Just remember that Verizon frowns on using the e815 or other phones to
tether to a laptop, so do it your own risk.

Yes it is. When you use Mobile web it is much faster than the old 1X system. I notice the difference when using my E815. The pages just pop on the screen. Only the newer phones can use that system. I also have noticed that my phone calls use that system also. My calls are clearer and connect faster when I hit the send button. Sites have a card in them for EV access. When you access a cell site when turning the phone on it will hit 1X first-then when it OK's it in the system the EV icon turns on. So it is a seperate access point for BOTH phone and data here in San Diego. The signal strength is the same just the cell site lets you you that mode for calls and data access which seems to have priority over 1X. So I like it cause calls connect faster and my mobile web pages just pop all at once when using the net.

I hate to be the one to break it to you, but EVDO actually has nothing
to do with voice. EVDO stands for "EVolution, Data-Optomized," and the
only thing it does is provide an optimized additional data channel that
the phone can access on top of the existing voice/data channel. This is
the part that makes data run faster.

The next logical progression WILL affect voice (EV-DV is "Evolution,
Data-Voice"). But that's a ways off, if Verizon ever does implement it.

If you're experiencing better call quality, it's probably a function of
the phone's design, or it's purely psychological.

Sorry, there's nothing in EVDO that facilitiates calls connecting
faster, either. At least not over 1xRTT. Data IS faster though.

You will have to enter a new contract. That is why the phone is discounted,
the new contract.

EVDO is not the same as wireless high speed Internet - it's Verizon's own
private broadband network to which you subscribe and pay for....

Tetheriing to a laptop is nothing Verizon cares about - it's easily done and
works well except that you cannot "send" on the Verizon network without that
pesky subscription for which you have to pay extra.....

Nothing to it, shipmate - while there is no MOK for the e815, you can use
Motorola phone tools, upgraded to version 3.25b. Any other tweaks you need
can be found in:

Explain how it is not a high speed internet connection, and yet can be
called a "broadband network" at the same time?

Actually, I should clarify: Verizon does not want people signing up for
*VCAST*, and then tethering to a laptop. This is because VCast gives
you access to EVDO, and unlimited airtime for other data-based functions.

If you have NationalAccess MOU, then tethering is fine. You just won't
get EVDO speeds because you don't have an EVDO handset.

Cable-based broadband internet service is private and limited to a
subscription. So is DSL. So is dialup for that matter.

Anyone who has used a laptop data card can tell you otherwise.

200-400kbps with bursts to 2Mbps is plenty fast. I would certainly
think twice about using a dialup connection if I had access to this.
