| What's the best place to grab a SIM card for prepaid service in the US
right now?
I'm not in the country so I can't shop around. Should I hit a retail
T-Mobile store? Another retail chain? Order online?

You can also get it at a T-Mobile store.
Of course the best quality and least expensive prepaid service in the
U.S. is on PagePlus, but you'd need a CDMA phone, or buy one from them.
See "http://prepaiduswireless.com/". |

Many eBay sellers are willing to deal with offshore clients, and this is
certainly an easy way to pick up a T-Mobile SIM + minutes at a good price.
I've done this several times without incident.

What sold me on T-Mobile is that I can buy minutes online and that the
minutes stay good for a year as I'm not in the US real frequently, but
I wouldn't mind keeping the same phone number between trips.
I'll be in the US mainly on business and we have a number of T-Mobile
SIMs that we hand out to employees while they're roaming in the US,
some prepaid and some postpaid, but you get a different SIM every
time. I want a personal number separate from our business numbers so
that I don't get any embarrassing surprises when someone else has my
number a week later. Using the same company makes it easier to
expense the charges. |

$100 to get me started isn't a big deal this will pay for itself in my
first 100 minutes of airtime vs the cost of roaming plus with T-Mobile
I don't have to buy a new phone either. |

Best is all subjective. If you are in an area with good coverage T-
Mobile service cannot be beat if you are a gold rewards subscriber. |

I've already decided on T-Mobile, and confirmed coverage where I
expect to be traveling. At this point I am just looking for where to
get a prepaid SIM. |

They're all over eBay cheap enough, or you could wait for Taget stores to
run another special- occasionally they bundle a free low-end phone with a
$100 airtime card purchase. Obviously the "free" phone includes the SIM,
and you have a backup phone in case something happens.
If you're in a hurry, T-Mobile.com sells them for $7, or you could probably
sweet talk a local T-Mo store to give you one if you buy a $100 airtime
card there. |

Dropping $100 on a card isn't a problem so I'll probably just aim for
a corporate store. Thanks! |

Yes, I was referring only to coverage and price per minute. I don't have
T-Mobile service where I live in Silicon Valley, though they have
finally been approved for a site not far from me (only took eight years,
it was Pacific Bell Wireless that initially started the process!).
Many of the places I go don't have any GSM service, let alone T-Mobile
prepaid. I do have two T-Mobile prepaid SIM cards because I bought some
quad band prepaid phones to have unlocked for traveling to Asia. |
