Cricket is a no-contract service with low-priced plans and sub-$100
phones catering mostly to low-income users. Reducing the barrier to entry,
(as small as it is) is probably a worthy trade-off considering their
business model.

Ah, my mistake- I though Cricket had implemented WAP plans, which I
assumed you might be able to tether through. Maybe I'm thinking of
MetroPCS.

I think you missed the point. And, oops, Todd was able to give you a
pointer to a web page citing Leap's spectrum purchase! Ah, and I still don't
see a cite from you about Sprint. I notice you didn't comment about that.

Wrong, liar. One was pointed out to you. Meanwhile, you still haven't
produced ANY evidence that Leap uses Sprint's network for anything relevant
to this discussion.

Not unless Sprint is using Leap Wireless or MetroPCS systems. The Cricket
system here belong to Leap, alone. Cricket roams onto the other CDMA
carriers outside its service areas, so you still have comms but at
outrageous rates. If you rarely travel, it's a deal.

Cricket's license is on 1900, here.

The reason I found out why they don't support tethering is they don't sell
smartphones at all.....

Again, Cricket offers "unlimited mobile web" on the phone for $5/month
(or "free" on $45 and higher plans.) Unfortunately, upon further research,
I've read that it's an http-only proxied service; no ports besides the
http proxy on 8080 are open- no email, no streaming, etc., and, despite
being EVDO, it's speed-capped to 200kbps. (Again, this is the data add-
on for voice plans I'm talking about. The USB modem $40/month service is
unrestricted.)

> only the USB modem, which would be a separate
> device on a separate number from the phone, wouldn't it?

Yes- that's the unrestricted $40/month "broadband" plan, but they do have
this on-phone mobile web, which you theoretically could tether with a bit
of work, but it seems hardly worth the effort given the proxy and port
restrictions.

Then again, if you're going to get a Cricket voice plan anyway, I'm sure
you can get $5 worth of use out of this proxy service, particularly if
you can somehow get remote desktop to tunnel through it.

Actually the same wording is used by Alltel, but they've never enforced it,
at all. It just gives them opportunity to cut your speed for more
distribution.....At LEAST it's no TWENTY FIVE CENTS PER MEGABYTE!!

T-Mobile bought out Suncom's system in the South. They had no footprint
here before purchasing Suncom.

Like Verizon will do to Alltel, T-mobile screwed up Suncom's unlimited
service......

There's a problem. There no "data" plan on any Cricket phone. They don't
sell smartphones. The only data comes on the one USB modem they offer. I
asked if they would turn it on on my Z6m. They said no.

When they reflash the firmware to Cricket, I understand the Bluetooth will
only support Handsfree, Verizon style.

Just a followup- at least here in Denver, Cricket includes unlimited "mobile
web" on their $45+ plans, and as a $5 add-on to lower-priced plans.

Perhaps the employees were confused and thought you wanted the $40 "mobile
broadband" plan added to Z6m.

I think the "secret" would be to activate the Z6m on Cricket without
reflashing it. You could probably update the PRL and edit the data settings
to Cricket's via a data cable and software (BitPIM, etc.)

There's a forum on HowardForums dedicated to Cricket and has a lot of info
on do-it-yourself Cricket conversion:
http://www.howardforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=336

I didn't see a tutorial for the Z6m specifically, but the way you work that
tablet of yours, I suspect you could "bend" the info there to work on the
Z6m.

> When they reflash the firmware to Cricket, I understand the Bluetooth will

Alternately the Motorola forum there might tell you how to unlock the BT to
reenable tethering after a Cricket reflash. The Verizon users do it all the
time.

Good luck!

John. There are no contracts at Cricket...none. They still subsidize the
phones, but not as much. You can leave without the contract nonsense every
month.
