FWIW, locations I've checked in Northern California have been reasonably
accurate.

It shows my sister's house in San Diego as best coverage - in her
case that means there's a corner in her yard where she can get a
connection.
I'm suprised to see Hwy 280 at Sand Hill Rd (where the venture
capitalists have their offices, near Palo Alto) showing "moderate".
Is it really no longer a dead zone? Even more surprising, it shows
as having 3G, even where regular is only "moderate".

I am sure you were being funny with this reply.

I went and for shits and giggles typed in an address locally and the map
never popped up any information. So to try an experiment I called the new
service number (No I don't want anything to do with Cingular) and this nice
guy said what was the address and zip code etc. He comes back on the line
and states "Service is not available at this place" however I told him that
my Verizon service is crystal clear etc. and it does show under partnered
that service was available on the fringes. Of course I told him that it
would have been better to have the coverage map actually work and to have an
email link to send questions for service *Before* one actually purchases
service. He agreed. But it was a waste of around 45 minutes of my time and
if I wanted to have additional service from Cingular I would have been
turned off by the lack of any type of functioning at their web site. (You
get a discount on the web versus non via calling as it states on the web
site)

No, I wasn't. I checked a few areas I care about and compared their
claimed signal strength to my actual results. My own home, my parent's
home, a friend in another state... in all three, the claimed signal
quality matches pretty well with what my phone reports in each area.

When I signed on with Cingular a year and a half ago, they did not have
such a map, so I used T-Mobile's, on the assumption that if T-M has
decent coverage where I live, so would Cingular. And I was right.

Well, duh. While you can fudge the coverage of T-Mob to Cingular, you
cannot do the same from VZW for the simple fact that while T-Mob and
Cingular are GSM and use a lot of the same towers, VZW is CDMA and uses
different towers. There is ZERO coverage by VZW (or Sprint) where I
live, but I generally have at least three, usually four or five, bars
of signal from Cingular. This is due to the topography here. There
are three CDMA towers in theoretical range of me, but they are all on
the other sides of hills. OTOH, I have a direct line of sight to the
single GSM tower in the middle of town.

And thank you for the cellular lesson. I am quite aware of what service uses
what. But it was nice of you to tell me again.

The map did not function for me. By chance were you logged in to your
service when you used the coverage map?

I was not since I am not a customer. Also in order to send email to Cingular
you also have to log in to your account.
Kind of stupid if you are trying to get new business. Based on that and the
fact Verizon Wireless has such an email link for customers and non alike it
would be to Cingular's interest to have such a non subscriber email link for
questions etc.

Nope.

One thing I did notice, though not right away, is if you give the
search a vague location, it gives you suggestions at the bottom of the
page, not right next to the search box. Could it be that you entered a
vague search and didn't see the suggestions?

As an example, enter the city "Sharon" and the state "MA".

The deluge of spam has made email essentially unusable for many
companies as an external communications vehicle. What's so bad about
calling toll-free instead?

I went back and looked at the T-Mobile map, which I thought was pretty
accurate as a Cingular coverage guestimate in the past, but now I find it
very pessimistic in the spotty areas. It also leaves what looks like all
of Lake County to "roaming", just like the new Cingular map.

A few years ago, I called ATTWS about coverage in my area, and they
provided a good PNG via email that seemed accurate, but it was a one-shot
thing, not an interactive map.

I thought it just didn't show coverage for you... It didn't work at all?
It worked for me, and I wasn't logged in, although I might have a cookie
lying around.

Nope. Works fine here without login, account, or cookie.
You might want to purge your browser cache and try again.
Also make sure that Javascript is enabled.

I'm not a Cingular customer, and the map worked fine for me. Very
accurate in the case of my home address- it correctly shows no service in
my neighborhood, but excellent coverage just a mile east of me.

My guess is that rightly or wrongly, they want you to call by phone so
their sales team can go to work on you!

Everything works as it should. In fact as I wrote in another post the guy at
sales said it could have been on their end.
I did get to look at the map of the area after I typed in another address
etc. Without being a customer or logged in as same.

Well we have a few things wrong here.

1) The Cingular site states the deals on service are "On-Line" and calling
will not get you the same prices as per disclaimer on web site.

2) Calling the toll free number places one in phone hell, Press 1 for this,
2 for that, etc. Then its Press 1 again if you are a customer, Press 2 if
you want to change service or get new service, then another menu of press
this and that.

3) At one time when I went to the site it had such an email link but its now
history. Again Verizon, Nextel and T-Mobile have email links for questions
*Before* you get service as well as the toll free numbers.
