My 3G is 9 months old.
Last night I left it on charge all night, did not use it all morning.
At lunch I turned it on and it's at 20% power.

I don't think I'm using anything that consumes power while idle.
What gives?

Did you leave an app running while it was idle? Some can keep using
power even if the screen is off.

Are you sure about that?

I clicked through everything before I posted that.
I did not see anything that looked like it would keep running.
But I still turned off anything - notifications etc - that I did not
use. I also turned off 3G.

Primary uses:
Phone 3 times/day
Texting - 2 per day (I know, I know)
Check email - once/day
Only Gmail is set up to push
Fetch New data was set to 15 minutes (now 1 hour)
eReader - as needed
I rarely web surf on it.

Trapster probably runs all the time, but I've turned off all the
notifications. I'm about to the point of deleting it.

Have you done the 3.0 update very recently?
If so, back up everything and schedule an appointment at the Apple
store, ASAP.

In the meantime, you can actually turn it off when you're not using it.
Completely, that is.

I meant whether you left any app open when turning off the screen. I
used to use a Twitter app that turned on GPS and then left it on, even
when the screen was off. That ran down the battery fast. But it only
happened once or twice before I figured out what was causing it, and
never again since.

Well, the other problem is iTunes does not recognize my phone since I
did the update, so no backups. I probably need to stop and have a chat
with those people.

The only app I tend to leave on is Stanza, an ebook reader.
But I had not considered that, thanks

I did not think that possible.

Then maybe that's what I'm missing.
I usually just hit the buttons one.

So if I do the above, will it still take calls?

I'll try that, and keep an eye on it.

Thanks for all the help !

It's still "on". The circuit's still running to light up the screen and
show you the slider so you can turn it back on....which takes power.
