I'd like to purchase a mac for my family. Can a family member be
logged in and another member be remotely logged in using a different
ID? Sort of like unix servers having more than one x window sessions
going on at the same time?

Thanks

very disapointing. I was hoping the tech was wrong.

No, using the native GUI, this can not be done. Of course, you can run
X on your Mac and achieve the same thing, of course, but VNC/Remote
Desktop shows/controls what is on the monitor.

Which is a shame, if you ask me.

While I agree it's a shame Apple hasn't made this easier, it's not
entirely true that it cannot be done.

You can run an alternative VNC server called Vine Server and attach
multiple VNC listening services to backgrounded Mac OS X user accounts
using Fast User Switching:

There is a rude and crude way to do what you want, but you still
need another computer(s) to view the other accounts with.

You need to download and install the Vine Server (aka OSXvnc).
The Vine server allows you to log into a Mac OS X user account,
start the Vine Server, the using the Mac OS X "Fast User
Switching" you can switch to a different account.

In the 2nd account you repeat starting a Vine Server session
(using a different display port). Again you can then use "Fast
User Switching" to move to yet another Mac OS X account.

Now you should be able to use a VNC client on another system and
connect to the different Vine Servers running on the Mac.

NOTE: You must manually log into each account and start the Vine
Servers then "Fast User Switch" to the next. As far as I know
this can not be down automatically.

Just wondering -- is the OP asking because he wants the remote user to
be able to run apps? After all, there are ways to mount the drive
remotely and be able to read/write files in general.

Yes you can login remotely from a different computer using a different
user name, but you won't be able to share the desktop. You need screen
sharing to that. It is included in OS X 10.5. You can, however, share
hard drives and use the mac as sever. You might want to try Apple
Remote Desktop.

Why not just share your HD?

So what I want to do is let my daughter do her computer thing, like
homework, using MS apps and browser, and the anima viewing she does
online or watch a movie, while I log in under a different login id
from my laptop and do my work or online studying or gkw. I don't want
to 'see' or 'share' the same screen. It may mean if we both intend to
run windows in fusion at the same time that we need separate copies.
It almost sounds like I need vmware server to run multple instances of
osx and windows. Has anyone done that?

To run VMware server, you also need to purchase Mac OS X Server
($500 retail). And I do not know what version of VMware would be
required, but I suspect it would not be cheap. When you are done,
it would be less expensive to just get a Mac mini for your
Daughter to use.
