Post subject: "soft power" control of IDE drives?
Archived from groups: comp>sys>mac>hardware>storage (more info?)

Is it possible to configure (with jumpers?) an IDE drive in such a way
that it *doesn't* automatically spin up when power is applied to it, but
it rather goes into "standby" mode and waits for a software command from
the computer to fully turn it on?

The reason I ask is because I'm considering getting a dual drive
enclosure (the OWC RAID enclosure:
http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/MEFW912AL2/),
but set it up for two independant hard drives where one of the drives is
used normally, for video/audio, while the other one is used only now and
then for backing up the first drive.

To save tear and wear on the backup drive (and any additional noise) it
would be great if it could just turn it on when I need to do a backup,
and otherwise have it turned off.

A dual-drive enclosure would save me the clutter of yet another AC power
adapter, another Firewire cable and yet another "box" on my desktop.

Any quiet, small SCSI drives available? - I like the reliability of SCSI and the speed though I'm not sure how close an older SCSI drive would be to a modern 120 or 160 gb 8mb cache IDE drive. I can't stand the whine of some Quantums though and was wondering if there were any SCSI drives....

Experience with LG external multi format drives - The LG external drives have a couple features I could use: USB and Firewire, plus the ability to read DVD-RAM. Anybody have any experience with any of these on Mac OS X (10.2, 3 or 4)?

Setting up "Raid" with only two hard drives? (G5 powermac) - I've just gone and got a second hard drive for my G5 powermac =) and i heard that i could set the two drives up as "raid" which would impove my computers performance by being able to use the two hard drives simultanusly or something like that (...

Firewire bus power + mobile RAID 0 drive = concern! - Hi. I'm really interested in this mobile drive, which is actually a RAID 0 configuration, from G-Technology: http://www.g-technology.com/Products/G-RAID-mini.cfm I really like this idea, but I'm a little worried about running it on FireWire bus power.....
