Post subject: A very odd occurrenceon a G4!
Archived from groups: alt>sys>mac>newuser-help (more info?)

I have a G4 Mirror Front Tower running 10.4.8. I'm using a Linksys
(non-wireless) Router. I have no wireless devices on the computer.

For a week now, when I open the Network icon in the Sidebar I see my
own G4 local icon and a Library Icon. After a few minutes, server icons
from other peoples computer start showing up in the list. These are 4k
aliases and cannot be opened or connected. They also cannot be deleted
because of insufficient privileges. The file is Read Only and cannot be
changed. After a restart, The list is clear and after several minutes,
more server icons appear.

Using WhitePages.com, I found several of the names were located in
my general neighborhood.

My service provider states that. without a wireless router this
cannot happen, so it must be an Apple problem.

Any thoughts

I wouldn't trust your service provider. Why do you think it's Apple's
"fault" that you can see other machines on the roadrunner network?
Sounds to me like these other machines' IP addresses are registered
somewhere that your router "lets" you look, and that they have defeated
their own firewalls (or don't have any). You can't connect because they
don't have public, shared folders.

That's my guess, anyway

Interesting thought - Obviously they're listed with the server, but
I'm unaware of any way my router could log into such data.

I'm not up on some of the terminology, but he tech at the Service
provider was referred to as a tier 3 tech. Since my internet service
doesn't seem to be effected in any way that I can tell, my concern was
this: are these people trying to get into my computer, or is my
computer trying to get into theirs, or is there some cross talk going
on in the cables through the neighborhood?

I'm ruling out my particular computer because the miss's computer, a
G3 iMac running 10.3.9, is doing the same thing.

Does Apple maintain a forum where something like this is discussed?

My Apple Care account lapsed years ago, and I don't feel like paying
$49.95 (or what ever it is now) for them to tell me it's the Service
Provider.

Likely, your mac is asking who else is on the local network (research Apple's
Bonjour technology) and whoever is on your neighborhood is reporting back to
your computer. This doesn't mean that anyone is trying to get on your
computer, and it doesn't mean that they are not trying to get on your
computer.

Apple maintains *lots* of forums. Possibly even one that discusses this. If
you can't find the topic listed, you could start a new topic in the
appropriate forum. Like a networking forum.

I would look into how your computers are adding this network file, and see if
a setting can be changed to prevent this. I don't know whether this can be
done or not. It is likely that your service provider's network is configured
wrong, and they just don't know what is going on, and are blaming it on
Apple.

Bottom line, if you don't have the ability to receive wireless communications
(no Airport card/antenna in any of your Macs), then the only way that some
neighbor's computer could get listed on your machine is through your service
provider's wire.

Thanks for the replies. I use to consider myself quite knowledgable in
Sys 9.x, but I feel like an idiot on 10.4.8. I wouldn't know where to
look for a file that has my computer looking for other IP numbers on
the ISP network.

Tried the Apple forums for an hour without success. At one point there
were over 12,000 entries to look at. I'm hoping this is just a harmless
quirk on my internet connection. Looking back, I added no software to
the computer just before the onset of this phenomenon. At any rate,
I'll try starting a new thread on the Apple forum, and hope that
someome can find it.

Anyhow, thanks again for the replies. If I come up with something,
I'll post it here.

Files don't look for anything; you want a SETTING in system Prefs.
Specifically, check out the Sharing settings.

It certainly is, unless you have turned on public file sharing or some
other options (like iTunes sharing).
Let your firewall (in the router) do the work.
