So mdimport is related to Spotlight and Spotlight is probably
resorting stuff after the backup. This is no good as its a resource
hog. Then I thought of something. What if I used the Compare feature
in backup software and just backed up what I've touched since the last
backup? That wouldn't take much time at all. Then there is no
reindexing of Spotlight. I'd kind of like to kill Spotlight
altogether but I do use it once in a while. I wonder how long it will
take to index about 220 gbs of files?
Update: I just disabled the backup hard drive (in System Preferences,
Spotlight, Privacy) and POOF, mdimport is using almost no resources. |

mdimport is the process that is invoked whenever a file is created or
changed (or run manually). It identifies the type of the specified file
(within a developer-extensible hierarchical type system called UTI) and
compares that type to the list of claimed types exported by the set of
installed importer plugins. The plugin that most specifically matches
the detected file type is invoked to populate a structure with all the
metadata it wants, and then that metadata is stored by mdimport.

Resorting?
Oh, you mean reindexing, right? If your backup process consists of
duplicating files to another mountable device, then yes Spotlight will
index any new or changed files on that device unless it has been told
not to.

Yes.

Yes - this is all starting to make sense now. |

That's a good reason to use features like SuperDuper's Smart Update,
which only copies changed files (after the initial full backup).
Spotlight will only need to reindex the changed files, which will take a
lot less time.

I believe that you can turn off indexing on the backup Volume - which
you probably want to do since there is nothing new there.

I was trying that with Silverkeeper and it just flies through files
that haven't been touched. Its really working well now. |

Yes - did that in the Privacy settings. Just added that external
drive. Worked perfectly. |

Its in a removable hard drive rack on the same IDE channel as the
source hard drive. |
