Repeated cleaning of my Apple Pro Keyboard over the last 3-4 years has worn
off the lubrication on the metal support bars found under the larger keys.
The "return" key is particularly afflicted, and most noticeable as it's
probably the second-most-used non-alphanumeric key on my keyboard (after
the space bar). The key will resist being pressed unless you push straight
down.

I know from experience that WD-40 isn't a particularly good choice, as
it will eventually evaporate, and has a habit of dribbling into the
electronics. I won't count out petroleum jelly, but something tells me
that would be too viscous and would pick up dirt too easily.

What is the recommended lubricant? Does anyone know what Apple itself
uses when it builds keyboards?

I don't know what is the *recommended lubricant*, but before I used
anything like petroleum jelly or WD-40, I would rub a little paraffin on
the place that seems to be binding.

A very little bit of paraffin, for instance, a rub from a piece of wax
paper, may do the trick and should be pretty harmless, regardless.

Other sources of paraffin are candles and crayons. Just apply a *very
thin* coating.
