Hello. Is there a freeware encryptor software to encrypt my data files
like TrueCrypt?
Thank you in advance.

It's been a long long time since I used Jaguar, but I'm pretty sure
that Disk Utility could create encrypted disk images.

Is that on current HDD or do I have to make new partitions?

You can save disk images anywhere you want. A disk image is simply a
file, that mounts a volume as a virtual disk when you open it.

What are your wants and needs? I created an encrypted virtual drive
using OS X features. It was sufficient for my needs. One downside
is that I periodically need to copy it by hand, as I have it excluded
from my Time Machine (I don't want to back up anything that big just
because I changed one small file in it). Copying it to where Time
Machine picks up the copy gets me my backup.
I do the same thing with my Parallels VM. I've read that Outlook
stores everything in one file, which would be a bigger pain. |

Well, I would like to be able to use the file on PC (Debian/Linux and
Windows) if possible like TrueCrypt (no support for 10.2. .

I use an encrypted one on my portable Macs to carry around sensitive
info like credit card numbers. Make sure you use a strong password!

Yes. You can store it in the encrypted disk image in case you forget
it.

Sweet. I will check it out later. I assume newer Mac OS X is backward
compatible with it too.

You would benefit from using a sparse bundle instead of a sparse image.
An item added to a sparse bundle will tend to change only a few of the
embedded bands. When backing up with TM, only the changed bands will be
added; not the whole thing.

I don't quite understand what you're saying (sounds as though I don't
need to use my procedure), and I don't understand at all what I need
to do. |

Sparse bundles are a Leopard-specific format of disk image. A sparse
bundle is a folder containing multiple files (bands) which when put
together contain all the disk image data. The point is, when you just
update a bit of the whole disk image you tend to just end up changing
one of the bands. Thus Time Machine only needs to back up one of the
bands.
The other alternative to OS X's and TrueCrypt's encrypted disk images
are PGP's encrypted disk images. PGP is however commercial.

Chris |

So if I have my encrypted dmg file, I can tell Time Machine to go
ahead and back it up, and it will automatically not fill up every time

You *did* notice the distinction beteen sparse images and sparse
bundles, right?
