Hi. I got a new Mac for my birthday and my parents are making me give
my old one to my younger sister. I don't want the letters and photos
that I trashed resurrected by her. Thank you.

To answer your question, your best bet is to format the hard drive and
reinstall everything.

Practically speaking however, she would have a little trouble recovering
those files without special software.

Disk Utility> Volume> Erase> Erase Free Space

should do the trick. Your options there are:

Zero out erase

7-pass erase

35-pass erase

Just what kind of letters and photos WERE they? ;^)

Thank you Barbie,
The letters included my most pious and saintly correspondence with
friends of the Pope, and photos taken at my most favorite places to go
fishing.
