My mom needs to back up her iMac to an external USB drive. I use rsync
scripts in the Terminal for my own backups, but she needs something
friendlier. I'm looking for an app that you just drag to your hard
drive, double-click, and then pick a few simple options for what you
want to back up, where it should back up to, and how often you want it
done. It should do the rest -- install itself in Startup Items, do the
backups nightly (or whatever), and generally be friendly and helpful.
Note that it does NOT need to do incremental backups, or compress the
backup files, or anything else -- we just want the USB drive to contain
a mirror of her files, updated nightly. It does, however, need to
properly support HFS+ and resource forks.
I see a ton of backup utilities on VersionTracker, but it would take a
long time to try them all. Anybody have a recommendation?
Thanks,
- Joe |

I've used SuperDuper for some time. It's a no-brainer choice.

The SuperDuper! (which I've already recommended for a backup solution)
instructions are about as clear as anything can be, and SuperDuper! is free,
$30 if you wish to reduce the time of making a backup by using the "smart
backup" capability.

So for $30 you make SuperDuper! smart. For $10 the ebook makes *you*
smart. m.

I too can recommend SilverKeeper. When my internal disk failed I simply
booted to the backup disk I had created using SilverKeeper, and carried
on as if nothing had happened.

SuperDuper backs up everything, which may or may not be what is wanted.
I forget if it has a simple setting to back up just the Home folder,
which is more likely to be what is wanted.
I know that the paid version can be set to do all sorts of things, but I
didn't find the instructions easy for that.
I use Chronosync for backup of my own files, it's easy to set just to
backup certain folders.
