Yesterday I was preparing to back up my 3000+, 1+ megabyte photos. They
were being exported to what I thought was a folder on my desktop.
Unfortunately there was no folder and the photos were all dumped onto
the desktop itself. This effectively froze the finder, but I thought
that it was a recoverable situation. I would simply reboot from the CD
and install a new system. However, the catastrophe is that after
shutting down the computer it will not restart. Dead. Nothing happens.
Suggestions short of hari kari would be graciously received. Thanks.

iBook G4 - System 10.3.9 - 384MB ram - 30GB hard disk- 2gigs of photos

Did you hold down the C key when trying to restart? I would try starting
in safe mode. Finally, you could try hooking up a Firewire from another
Mac and treating it as a hard drive. Then, move the pictures to a folder.
This link has some short cuts for booting options.

If the Finder was frozen, I assume that you shutdown either by turning
off the power button or by unplugging. You might want to reset the PMU
as a first step. You can get directions for the at Apple (it varies
from machine to machine) - just put "rest PMU" in the search box at
Apple support.

You might want to bump your memory if you can afford it.

My suggestion:
1.Find another mac with firewire interface, boot this mac first.
2.Connect your iBook with firewire cable to another mac.
3.Boot the iBook and press "T" button to make iBook an external firewire
drive.
4.Backup whatever you want with another mac you get.
5.Shutdown both mac and disconnect the firewire interface.
6.Boot iBook with CD and reinstall the MacOS X. Remember to erase the disk
during the installing process(there is the option of reformatting).
