Post subject: How to activate Spelling and Grammar Check in Word
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>mac>office (more info?)

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

My word documents will not automatically do spell and grammar check.I can not activate Spell & Grammar check for Word. Under preference - under authoring and proofing tools the Spelling&Grammar icon is faded and will not "light up" when clicked on. With word document open, I go to "Dictionary" and I have checked off everything to have spell and grammer check done automatically. Is it possible, that I need a dictionary installed? My tech people at school have no idea what the problem is. Please HELP!

Thank, but that did not work. The Spelling and Grammar check is still grayed out under Word preferences and the spell check isn't working.

The first consideration is the Language formatting of the document. If the
Language is formatted one way & your Default Language is another Spelling &
Grammar won't work. (It has to be understood that "Language format" has
nothing to do with "characters displayed" - you can take any text and "tag
it" with any language formatting you wish, just like Bold or Italics.)

If you Select All (Command+A) then go to Tools > Language, then select your
primary language [English (US) for example], does the Spelling & Grammar
command come back to life? If not, reply back to explore it further.

Have a run through the information at this link:

http://word.mvps.org/mac/SpellCheck.html

Confirm the appropriate language version & see the section pertaining to:

Sorry Jim, but that reply wasn't meant for you Smile If you just installed
Office 2008 it's quite unlikely that your preferences files have been
subjected to enough abuse to cause any damage.

You may be experiencing similar symptoms, but your problem most likely
revolves around a different set of issues. Since you jumped into this thread
we have nothing to go on in order to offer any meaningful suggestions.

Please post a separate NEW message stating all particulars about your
specific version numbers of OS X & Office, whether your install was a full
installation or an upgrade, which version of Office you previously had
installed (or still do have installed) as well as a basic description of
your Mac configuration.
