Hi Alan,
If I understand correctly, Word crashes unexpectedly a lot? Word X is a
little less stable than Word 2004 (or so I hear, I skipped Word X), but it
shouldn't crash regularly. Try the standard troubleshooting tips, listed
here:

Also, train your fingers to hit cmd-s to Save every time you pause to think,
and then you shouldn't lose much work even if it crashes.
Word 2004 does include Portuguese/Brazilian spelling tools (but not
grammar), but Word X didn't (I think for economic reasons).
