I have a 15" PB running Panther that I use with an Airport Extreme base
connected to a Canon iP4000 USB printer. I have no problem wirelessly
printing from OSX apps. I can also print from Classic apps *IF* I
reconnect the iP4000 directly to one of the PB's USB ports. All my
trial and error attempts to wirelessly print from Classic, thru the
AEBS, to the iP4000 have been unseccesful. From what I can tell,
Classic's chooser can not see the printer when the printer is connected
to the AEBS.
Questions: is it even possible to wirelessly print thru an AEBS under
Classic, and if it is, how do I have to configure (Classic,Panther,or
the AEBS) to make this work ? |

Oh, for a moment I thought you wanted to print from Mac Classic (the
Motorola 68000 Mac Plus successor, you know). LOL.
Anyway, when booted in Mac OS X and when printing wirelessly to CANON
PIXMA IP4000R from Classic apps my solution was to get a shareware
"PrintToPDF 2.4.4" and install it as the Classic System's printer
driver. Then I use it to print to PDF from old Classic apps. Then I open
the saved .pdf with the Preview.app and print it. Works great. |

Brey-
I don't think you can do it under Panther and prior versions of OS X.
There was a change in how 10.4 handles Classic printing. Perhaps you can
find info on it by searching the Apple web site.
Is there another OS X machine on your network? If there was, you could
set it to use the wireless printer, and share it on the network. However
you might be back where you started, not being able to print to a shared
printer from Classic!

You can do the following:
1. Check "Printer sharing" in System Preferences/Sharing
2. Using Desktop Printer Utility (Default location is Applications (Mac
OS 9)/Utilities) create LPR printer with Generic PPD and IP address of
Your Mac (in theory You can use 127.0.0.1 but It doesn't work for me).
You can leave Queue empty if there is only one printer connected to Your
Mac.
Printing will be much slower than from OS X or native OS 9 printing but
at least it works.
Good luck,

Doesn't seem to work. I can create a Classic desktop LPR printer and I
can open a classic app to print and the correct print dialog comes up.
So far so good. I can even print successfully to file but if I print
to the printer the print job spools OK then just hangs without any
error message. Looks to me like a communication issue. I have printer
sharing turned on on the Classic side and I have the firewall turned
off on the OS X side. Any other ideas ? |

You have to turn on the printer sharing in OS X sharing preferences, not
in OS 9.

I'm not sure if it works, but you might need sharing in OS 9 as well if
there are any Mac OS 9 computers on the network that you want to be
able to print from (the computer physically connected to the computer
would also need to start Classic every time it boots up).

BF-
Prior to 10.4, Classic could access the various ports and print directly
to a printer. With 10.4, or at least 10.4.3, the OS X Print system seems
to intercept Classic print jobs.
If you are running 10.4.3, you may find it informative to open the printer
under OS X by double clicking it in the Printer Setup Utility's Printer
List, and observing what happens when you try to print under Classic.

Sorry. I did that with couple of printers that don't have drivers for OS
9, and it worked for me. Maybe you should try disabling background
printing in OS 9 print dialog.
