I put together an old Performa 61XX system for some nursing home
residents to use. Someone gave me a LaserWriter Select 360 to go with it.
Well I hooked it up and everything works fine, except that the printer
name in the chooser port window is a cute sexy slang word. I did a
complete initialization and installation of 7.6 and it's still there. I'm
just curious, is it somethiong the previous printer owner did, and how?
And how can I get it back to normal? Thanks. |

Unless I mis-remember, you're going to need to go into the Chooser,
select the printer, and a dialog should appear with a "setup" or maybe
"options" button for you to hit. Hit it and you should be able to rename
the printer to something a bit more "senior friendly".
(The printer stores its own name, among other things, in on-board NVRAM)

You won't find it in the chooser, and I don't know for sure the name
of the utility anymore and I no longer have a computer old enough to
look it up for you, but there will be a program called either
"Laserwriter utility" or something similar to that.
You choose the printer in the chooser, run this program, then you can
read and set all kinds of settings that live on the printer such as
its postscript name.
The 360 is a very nice printer btw. |

I have a Apple Printer Utility 2.2 on my hard drive and the Read Me
indicates that it will, among other things, rename a printer. Here is
part of the Read Me:
Apple Printer Utility Version 2.2
The Apple Printer Utility is a program that allows the configuration and
administration of PostScript printers.
Printer Support
The Apple Printer Utility 2.2 program works with all Apple PostScript
Level 1, PostScript Level 2, and PostScript 3 printers...
You might find this application on the Apple Support Site, but if not,
I'll be pleased to provide you with a copy.
It works with System 7.1.1 or later which means, I suppose, that it
should be run under Classic or an OS previous to OS X. |

It's available here:

ish-North_American/Macintosh/Printing/LaserWriter/>
I'm given to understand that it works in Classic.

You can change the printer name by sending the correct instructions in a
PosScript file to the printer.
I'd have to dig for a PostScript Reference manual, but I am too lazy
today. So if anyone has one, please let the original poster know what
the syntax etc. is.

This is true, but the utility does it for you with a nice GUI so
creating a PS file and sending it to the printer is a little bit of a
long way to go. |

Correct - but if you have no utility, or no OS 9 to run it ?

Google for Apple Printer Utility and download it. I believe it will run
in Classic. |
