Archived from groups: comp>sys>mac>misc (more info?)

Now that the Apple TV is available, it may be nice to get. My
understanding is that it will basically play anything that iTunes and
Quicktime can play. My first thought was to rip my favorite DVDs with
something like DVD Decrypter as VOBs and then store them on a huge
networked HD. Using iTunes or Quicktime, I would then just stream
whatever DVD I liked to my TV. However, I don't see a way to play
VOBs via Quicktime. There is a plug-in that is supposed to add VOB
support ( the MPEG-2 add-on @ http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/ ),
but my co-worker has that plug-in and he says he can't get it to work
with VOBs.

So, does anyone have any suggestions for me? It seems like I may just
have to buy a 400 disc DVD changer, but with Blu-Ray and HD-DVD coming
down the pike, that seems a wasted investment. I just like the idea
of ripping the DVDs, tossing them into a closet and having near
instant access to my movies.

Thanks,

Tom

You need the plug-in from Apple but you can't play VOBs with it in QT.
You need "MPEG Streamclip" (http://www.alfanet.it/squared5/
mpegstreamclip.html) to convert the VOBs to MP4 which QT can play and
should be viewable via Apple TV.
