Post subject: TV out from MacBook Pro for old TVs?
Archived from groups: comp>sys>mac>portables (more info?)

Hello.

Is there a way to use ten years old or so old TVs (not HDTVs) as a
secondary display from an early 2008 MacBook Pro (2.4 Ghz; 15")? I know
on video cards on PCs, they have those S-Video or something similiar but
I didn't see one on this MacBook Pro. I do see a DVI port and have a DVI
to VGA adapter, but old TVs (e.g., CRT) don't have DVI and VGA ports
that I have seen. It would be nice to watch videos, DVDs, YouTube, etc.
fullscreen while using the laptop/notebook.

Thank you in advance. Smile

I assume you mean DVI to S-Video/Composite, right?

Whichever is suitable for your model.

Hmm, I thought DVI, VGA, and TV inputs were standard. So I have to look
for the one that works for the specific MacBook Pro model? And how do I
find out what exact model it is? It was bought it in early September 2008.

What I meant is if your MacBook has a DVI port, you'll need a DVI to
S-Video adapter. If it has a mini DVI port, you'll need a mini DVI to
S-Video adapter. And so on... You can find the adapter you need on
Apple's web store.

To find the specifications for your MacBook, go to
<http://apple.com/support>, click Specifications, and enter the
MacBook's serial number in the search field.

It's a regular DVI. When did MacBook Pros get mini-DVI? The one I saw
didn't have it. Is that in Air or something?

According to it, it said early 2008 model:

So then you need a DVI to S-Video adapter to connect to your television:

Does it have to be an Apple adapter or can it be a third party brand? I
assume third party will work fine since it is a standard DVI port.

That would be my assumption as well. But personally, I'd just buy the
Apple one, to be sure.

The Early 2008 MacBook Pro has a DVI port, so you need an "Apple DVI to
Video Adapter", which has both S-Video and Composite outputs. I have
one, used with my Mid 2007 MacBook Pro (and a Mac Mini) and it works
fine.

A different adapter would be required if you had a MacBook (with a Mini
DVI port). The latest "Aluminium Unibody" (late 2008) models with a Mini
DisplayPort have no adapter available to produce composite or S-Video
output.

Does it need to be from Apple or can it be a third party? I am assuming
a third party brand would work since it is a standard DVI port.

Wow, even Apple hasn't made one? Wow. I wonder what is up with that.

ANy DVI to S-Video adapter should do, assuming it's of good quality.

OK and thanks. Apple is usually expensive so trying to find a third
party one that is cheaper. Smile

You'll get what you pay for when it comes to this type of cable. And I
doubt you'll save more than a couple bucks, unless you buy something
really inferior. Buyer beware. ; )

Don't know. I've never bothered looking for a third party DVI to
composite adapter. I was referring to the product name of the Apple one.

There might be something special about the Apple one, e.g. it is
probably triggering a suitable video mode in the computer by identifying
itself correctly through the DDC pins, and a third party adapter might
not work properly if it doesn't supply the right ID.

Nobody other than Apple has made _any_ adapters for the Mini DisplayPort
so far (that I've heard about, anyway), and Apple has only made Mini
DisplayPort adapters for VGA, DVI, and Dual-Link DVI.

A possible explanation is that the video chipset in these computers
doesn't support the right video mode(s), so Apple decided it wasn't
worth creating an adapter for old technology TVs, which would have been
more expensive than usual because it would have to buffer and convert
the video signal in some way.
