Don't for a second think you have a patent on that sort of stuff. Anyone
who claims he or she has not done that, and more than once, is lying. |

This is why the help desk always asks that most infuriating of
questions, "Is it plugged in?"

This is why a good support technician will ask you to *unplug and
reconnect* every cable, as though the problem is a flaky connection on
one of them.
In the process, you will discover the cable that's not plugged in
without having to admit that you missed something so fundamental, which
will give you a warm fuzzy feeling toward the company.

It works better if you plug it in

It depends on what it's plugged into, as well. I read about a tech
support call where a customer had a power strip plugged into itself and
wondered why it didn't work.
So, Michelle, you haven't hit bottom yet! (That may or may not be
comforting, though...)

Hey! I've got a pending patent for a perpetual motion machine based on

It's really infuriating when it isn't plugged in.

And then there's the ultimate. "Oh, I cannot see that, we are in a
blackout."

Better than plugging the speakers into the wall, as at least two of my
friends have told me they did. This disaster was even mentioned in
speaker instructions I got once. It appears some people just cannot
resist the temptation to use those connectors for speakers.

Back in the days when a 64 character X 16 line plasma panel cost about $1000,
one of our plasma panels failed. Years later, the first-level supervisor
told me that he had covered for one of the technicians, who had put 120 v AC
across the signal input to the panel. I didn't even ask how he had come to
do that.
