Post subject: Can't get Spotlight to do anything--and it hides the clock as well!
Archived from groups: comp>sys>mac>system (more info?)

Ever since I upgraded from OSX 10.2 to Tiger the other day, I've been
unable to use Spotlight. There is a Spotlight icon that blinks very
slowly in the upper right hand corner of the screen, in the menu bar
where the clock should be. The clock does not appear (except as noted
below.) Neither of the keyboard shortcuts for Spotlight work. Clicking
on the icon does nothing.

The machine has had many, many hours to do whatever indexing it has to
do. I even left it on overnight. I've played with putting all my
top-level directories into the Privacy window and then taking one out.
No joy. The machine seems to run completely normally otherwise.

The only time I can see the clock is while the machine is shutting
down.

I want my clock back, and I wouldn't mind being able to use Spotlight.

What should I do?

Signed,

Spot-Un-Lit.

The throbbing Spotlight icon means that the index is still being built.
This can take a long time, but it is possible that something has gone
wrong. How did you perform this upgrade? If you simply applied the
installer, perhaps that wasn't a very good choice; breakage often
results. Do an archive-and-install so as to generate a clean system.
Upgrade to 10.4.5 immediately onto that. m.
