I'm getting a message which reads:

(null) - New Settings
New settings have been created for this application. Do you wish to use
these settings from now on?

Yes NO

Right behind it, I sometimes get this one:

Sync Server - New Settings
New settings have been created....etc.

So I tried resetting Safari, and in the process of dealing with the
results of that, I found this one:

AddressBookSync - New Settings
New settings have been created....etc.

Can someone tell me why I'm getting these messages and how (there goes
another one, the Sync Server message) I can make them go away?

The only time I've seen messages like those was after a few repeated
crashes of some applications. After a few crashes, Mac OS X creates a
new default preference file for the crashing app, in the hope that the
crashing is just due to corrupted preferences.

If that is what you are seeing your system might be badly messed up.

From the Finder Go menu, select "Go to Folder..." then type in:
/private/var/log/ then find the crashreporter.log file and double-click
it. It should open in the Console. See if you have a bunch of recent
entries, most likely the same as the apps mentioned in those message
dialogs.

If you do, you'll have to look into why it's crashing and what to do
about it. You may want to look at the crash logs for those apps and see
if there is a common reason. Crash logs can be found in:

~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/ ( ~ means start from your home folder)
and /Library/Logs/CrashReporter

I checked those logs and found some somewhat useful information, but
nothing that keyed to the times the events were occurring. It had
followed an attempt to print to an Epson printer I rarely use, and to
print from a Java-controlled zoomable image on a Sears parts website.

But a restart apparently fixed the problem.

I should apologize, too, for not doing a restart before I posted, and
not including model and OS in the posting: PB Pismo with 512mb running
10.4.2, and what I was doing when the problem began.
