Post subject: Resolution problem with two 30" Apple Cinema Display monitors
Archived from groups: comp>sys>mac>hardware>video (more info?)

My office bought a Mac G5 and two 30" Apple Cinema Display monitors
yesterday. The sharpness is just out of this world but we have a
problem with the resolution. On one monitor, the maximum resolution
that can be achieved is 2560 x 1600, while on the other one, we can
only get it up to 1280 x 800. When you drag a window (or anything else
for that matter) from one monitor to the other, it gets magnified (or
reduced, depending which way you're going). The video card is a NVDIA
GeForce 7800GT. Also, sometimes when you try to move the cursor from
one side to the other, it blocks at one end and simply won't cross over
to the other side, like the other monitor has erected a barrier to keep
it from entering is space. We then have to reboot and the problem goes
away, until next time. Any light you could shed on this woudl be
appreciated.

The 30" display requires a dual-link DVI port to run at full
resolution. Only one of the DVI ports on your graphics board is
dual-link. The optional Quadro FX 4500 board has two dual-link ports.
You could add a GeForce 6600 board to get another dual-link port, but
it is lower performance than the GeForce 7800 GT. (You can't add
another GeForce 7800 GT, even if you could find one, because it uses
extra power, and there is only one power connector on the mother board.)

When you have the cursor problem, look in the "Arrangement" panel of
the "Displays" preference. If it doesn't show the correct position for
the second monitor, you won't be able to move the cursor in the
direction you want.
