QuickImageCM seems to be a nice utility for viewing and getting info
about images on the desktop, although I've not yet used it very much.
But:
I had a downloaded .jfif image in a folder on my desktop.
I viewed it using QuickImageCM (via a hierarchical ctrl-click first to
QuickImageCM and then to its View command).
With the image open and viewable, I clicked the "Info" button in the
QuickImageCM toolbar.
With the resulting dialog box still open (and telling me that the image
was of type JPEG), I opened the enclosing folder in the FInder and
attempted to rename the image file as "newname.jpg" by selecting the
image file name, hitting Return, typing the new name, and clicking
elsewhere.
Doing this sent the Finder into an apparently endless spinning beach
ball mode in which I could not use the mouse to do _anything_ else
(including getting at Force Quit in the Apple Menu).
I eventually got at Force Quit using cmd-option-esc, and was able to
restart.
