I am trying to re-fill someone else's iPod I have just bought with my music.
I uploaded his music to my hdd and then UNchecked all of it to leave only my
music on my G4's drive for uploading.
For some reason I cant understand, when I try to load my music on it in the
normal way by plugging the iPod in, it insists on starting by loading some
of HIS music. Even worse, it tells me that I am not authorised to play 17 of
his tracks on my computer (which I can't even find and which certainly
aren't checked). It then continues to load lots of tracks including some of
mine but always stops after a certain number of tracks and tells me that it
can no longer read or write to the iPod.
Seems like I need to format the drive and start again but the format utility
on Tiger is grayed out when I try to do this. (or I am doing it the wrong
way or I am using some wrong format utility and need to reformat properly
before reloading the software?)
I have tried to erase and restore the whole drive and reflash (with a car
charger cable? Is this strong enough to flash? I know you cant re-flash
with a USB cable) and it did SEEM to erase and leave a blank iPod with all
the software reloaded. To prove this, it did erase even his name and
replace it with mine when I plugged it back in my computer and the iPod
seems to operate normally before I try to load.
Does anyone know what I am doing wrong? I am pretty sure that the iPod
ripping program is no longer running and have restarted the Powerbook a few
times (as well of course as the iPod) to prove it. |

I haven't actually upgraded to 7 yet because I heard there were so many
glitches with it that I figured I had to wait until they were all ironed out
before doing the upgrade: Besides I am not sure there is anything I want in
7 which I haven't already got in 6 and no one has mentioned upgraded sound
quality, smaller footprint, use of less resources, etc etc.

Curious: It doesn't appear in preferences where I have seen the tab before
but it DOES copy something to it before crashing on the 'cant transfer to or
from iPod' error message.

Does sound rather like an iffy hard disk in the iPod, doesn't it?
As they don't have SMART enabled on them disk errors are a right pain
as there's no intelligence to mark bad sectors as bad and ignore in
future, AFAIK.
I've (touch wood) sorted mine out - which displayed similar symptoms -
by repeatedly erasing in Disk Utility, running the HDD test on the iPod
itself (can't remember the keys to press to get this to work - have a
google) and then running a couple of restores.
Seems OK so far.
My problems emerged when I formatted it from FAT32 to HFS. I don't
think they were *caused* by this, just that the formatting showed up an
existing error...

Yes, it is curious their not having SMART to cure problems with the drive
isn't it? But the problem was that DURING THE TRANSFER PROCESS the error
started which told me that there was no communication in either direction.
Then the error messages stopped and the process finished while I was on the
phone with Apple!! Then when i hang up, put some more CDs on the hard
drive, the problems resurfaced and suddenly the whole computer started
failing:
Now disk utility tells me that I have node problems (and re-building B
directory problems) with the hard drive which MIGHT be fixed if I spend as
much as a whole drive would cost to buy Disk Warrior!

Assuming you have copies of all the music on your computer, reformat
and reload the iPod. If that doesn't fix it, Disk Warrior wouldn't be
able to, either. |

As a last resort, reformat it on a Windows box and run chkdsk with the
option to flag bad sectors. Sad to say, it's worked for me before now.
However, it still means you've got a dodgy HDD, just one that now appears
slightly smaller than before. |

How long should you trust a drive with dodgy sectors? Given the price
of ATA drives I'd say pretty much never...

Mmm... Exactly... Although replacing the ATA drive in an iPod can be a
fiddly job |

I understand that people buy broken iPods on (eg) eBay so they can join
the working pieces together

Curiously enough the problem is now with computer's HDD, not the iPod, And I
am now worried to see that no one thinks that the Disk Warrior solution will
work even if I throw money at the problem in this way? There are reports
online of it almost always working when you get the bad node, rebuilding
B-catalogue error message
I had thought of taking out the HDD and trying the manufacturer's disk
repair utility in Windows or Linux but that seems a daunting task on a G4
Powerbook and may well result in losing all the data on the drive.
For the moment I cant find my Tiger install disc, this computer had a
genuine copy of Office & Photoshop CS on it hwen I got it but I dont have
the instllation discs. And to cap it all off, there are hundreds of hours
worth of ripped CDs on the music library which would take an even longer age
(but not of course be impossible) to re-create. (these problems can be
traced to a time when I used some downloadded program to UPload songs, -
whcih I dont particualrly need ot keep, - onto my computer from the iPod: I
wonder if I can use that program to simply upload the CDs from the iPod to a
damaged-file drive?)
I dont mind using a utility to tell me whether I have a dodgy drive or not
and THEN try to salvage whatever I have on it before replacement. It is
probably still under warranty.
