Post subject: Powermac/9.1 network connection problem
Archived from groups: comp>sys>mac>comm (more info?)

I have a powemac 4400/200Mhz with a PCI NIC card (Sonic) on one of the
PCI slots. It is connected to a Motorola Router/WLAN unit that connects
to a ADSL modem. I have PCs hooked on to the same router. PCs work fine
and get their IP addresses automatically. But it is crazy with the mac.

The mac is running Open Transport 2.7.9 (I upgraded because 2.7.4 was
not working, neither did 2.7.6). AppleTalk is on. TCP/IP is set to use
the Enternet B1 slot connect, and DHCP is enabled. 802.3 is NOT
selected. The mac always comes up with the automatic private IP of
169.254.232.172, subnet mask 255.255.0.0. Ping doesn't work.

I tried reinstalling NIC drivers, disactivating/reactivating sequences
of appletalk, tcp/ip etc after power on - no luck. I had some luck just
one day when I plugged in the IP cable at the time the mac was in its
boot sequence. I don't know what happened but the IP address came on
right and I was able to go all the way to hit internet sites. That was
on OT274 with the old NIC drivers. I have never been able to reproduce
this may be because it was a timing issue and I have changed several
extensions in the mean time.

I tried IPNetMonitor tools (in the trial period) and found DHCP test
was a failure. I thought it was all due to a wrong date on my machine
(I have a bad backup battery) so I changed the date and tried - no
luck. Then I lost the license for the DHCP test tool even if I changed
the date back! Unfortunately, I am not a nuclear scientist!

Thanks for the response. Yes, I have tried on 2 cables, including the
one on which it worked once. The router manual mentions that it can
handle straight and cross over cables. I also deleted the TCP and
Appletalk preferences, rebuilt the desktop and tried again. It doesn't
work. The router detects that it is a 10-base T connection and its
indicator LED glows/blinks indicating activity. The NIC card has its
yellow light flashing and green stable. I don't know if this means that
the ethernet level is working fine.

Have you tried a different ethernet cable?

Thanks for the tip. I don't have another MAC but I do have a machine
with windows xp. I'll probably try out directly linking them. I have
swapped cables etc with no success. Manual setting of IP didn't work. I
suspect that network card isn't properly fixed. What beats me is that
it worked fine on DHCP just once when I was playing around removing the
cable and putting it back in as the mac booted.
