I am running OT and TCP/IP from 9.2.2 and a PCI ethernet card Sonic
with drivers. The machine is connected to a Motorola router which
connects to a DSL modem. The ethernet card is recognized and I have
been able to get an IP address just once when I was playing with
removing and reconnecting the jack.

An ethernet monitor shows send receive when I reset the router. But I
am never able to get any IP address. Greatly appreciate any pointers to
solving this problem.

Think the problem is that the 4400's TCP Control panel doesn't provide a
place to specify the address of the DHCP server and your router isn't
broadcasting its services. I have a 4400 but for various other reasons,
it's configured to use a static IP address. What happens if you
configure the Mac to use a static IP address within the range permitted
by your router?

How have you configured your TCP/IP control panel settings, particularly
the Connect Via: and Configure: pulldown menu options?

Also, did you try replacing the ethernet cable with a known good one,
or connecting the Mac to a different port on the router?

I tried the manual configuration with the static address. Internet
explorer returns error and IPNetMonitor shows that the actual address
is an 169. address which is an automatic private IP with no activity on
the wire.

I tried a new wire that works fine with between the router and a
Windows laptop, connected to the port on the router that works for the
PC. The router led shows that this is a 10Mbps link and the lights on
the PCI card on the mac are flickering. But IPNetMonitor shows no
activity on IP.

Also, the connect via is : Ethernet slot B1. Configure is : Using DHCP
server. The IP address returned is 169.254.89.172. Subnet mask:
255.255.0.0. IPnetmonitor shows DHCP server address as 169.254.255.254
but the control panel shows the server address as 169.254.89.172. The
date on the mac is bad (shows 1956) since I haven't replaced the
battery that ran out recently.

That sounds like the ethernet card is failing or the necessary control
panels a/o extensions are missing/corrupt.

Possibly. It worked just once a month ago who I was literally fiddling
with disconnecting and connecting the ethernet cable. I removed the
extensions and installed them back. It didn't work. I should probably
reinstall the OS and start from scratch and try it out. Thank you for
the tips.

I followed that, including removing the preferences and ran the whole
set up again. It came up with the 169. address and the wrong subnet
mask. Looks like I have to look at reinstalling 9.1 and then start
again. Thank you for the detailed advice.

You need to manually enter a name server address in the TCP/IP control
panel under OS 9 and before.

Open the TCP/IP CPanel

Select/enter/read from top to bottom

CONNECT VIA : DHCP

CONFIGURE : USing DHCP server

DHCP Client ID: (blank)

IP ADDRESS : Should display address of router assigned number

SUBNET MAST : Should display 255.255.255.0

ROUTER ADDRESS: Should display router address

NAME SERVER ADDR: Enter the name server address
specified by your ISP. You can
also add additional onces as secondaries.

Try 4.2.2.1 which is a public server.

Remember to close and save the settings, then reboot.

Do you have WhatRoute from the installer disl installed?

That might also be able to debug some issues between you and the modem.

Remember too, that on a DSL/Broad band connection, you need to reboot
the modem and router in specific order.

Do this:

Shut down computer, router DSL modem.

Now in this order reboot (turn on)

DSL MODEM (wait forall lights to display positive)
ROUTER
Computer(s)

This order assures that all connections are properly assigned from the
telephone line upward to your system. Booting out of order may drop a
necessary connection ID. They can only be established again by
rebooting fromt he bottom up in this way.
