Any suggestions?:

I ordered iWork 06. Pages is so slow that it is barely usable. Simple
selects take seconds, scrolling is painfully slow etc. Even typing is
delayed so letters appear only a second after being typed. MS Word and
TextEdit work fine.
iMac G5 1.6GHz, 768MB RAM.

I would try the usual fixes first.

1. A permissions fix.

2. Startup from the installer disk, but instead of installing anything, go to
the pulldown menus, find Disk Utility, and have Disk Utility try to repair
the HD. If Disk Utility finds problems but cannot repair them, DiskWarrior
and TechTool Pro are great at fixing issues as well.

3. Get and run Cache Out X and Preferential Treatment.

4. Try creating a new user, and seeing if the same problem occurs. If this is
a fix, then I would migrate to the new user. Let me know if this is the cure,
and I can give you some pointers on switching users well.

Are you using any kind of (non-Font Book) font manager?
The handling of fonts can be another variable in many apps.

There is also a font cache that can be cleared.

How much ram & free disk space do you have available? I have some
fairly complex Pages, and they're fine on a 600MHz iBook. It'll
certainly eat a lot of ram, since the file itself is a giant XML
document.
