Archived from groups: comp>sys>mac>printing, others (more info?)

Just installed 64 MB of additional memory in LJ2100M. Original error was "Out
of memory", which now is gone, to be replaced by "Page protector needed"
error when attempting to print.

Test page prints fine. HP driver is the latest, downloaded and installed.

Connected via AppleTalk via an Ethernet-to-AppleTalk adapter. But this is not
new; it has always worked.

Ideas?

Thanks,

You've definitely got more RAM installed than the printer can handle,
or the DIMMs you've installed in the slots are larger than the
supported 16mb maximum.

The LJ2100M supports a maximum of 40mb of RAM, broken down as follows:
- all LJ2100 models have 4mb of resident RAM preinstalled on the
motherboard
- the LJ2100M also has the PostScript emulation DIMM installed in one
of the 3 expansion slots. This DIMM adds another 4 mb of RAM.
- the LJ2100M has 2 remaining expansion DIMM slots, each of which can
hold a maximum size of 16mb.

Thus 4mb (motherboard) + 4mb (PS DIMM) + 2x16mb DIMMs = 40mb maximum.

See pages 3 and 23 of your user guide.

It sounds like the printer is having difficulty accessing the RAM,
probably due to the excess which it probably can't address.

If you remove the PostScript DIMM, you can replace it with up to a
16mb DIMM, but you will have to give up the PostScript emulation and
be satisfied with just the HP PCL6 emulation. This would give a
potential maximum of 52mb of RAM , e.g. 4mb (motherboard) + 3 x 16mb
DIMMs.

There is no way the printer can support more RAM than indicated above.

Make sure you've got the correct driver(s) installed for the emulation
you want to use.

Adjust your installed RAM in accordance with the printer's
requirements (again, see the user guide), and your problem will likely
disappear.

Phineas.

Thank you very much. Will adjust the memory and report back (for archival
purposes). It's amazing that this problem has not been documented on USENET.
Surely someone else has installed too much memory...
