Hello,
I'm a PC user, say what you will...I will say that as soon as I latch onto
some more $$, I'll certainly be seeing about getting a new Mac, if, for the
very least, to learn to use it, and then maybe make it my desktop...people I
know that use Macs swear by them for the most part.
A friend of mine has some questions that I've tried to scout out for her,
but haven't. I've done some baseline research from Google, but haven't
found any definitive answers, and would like to see if anybody can point me
down the right path.
1) I attempted to download the newest Adobe Reader for Mac, v. 7, and kept
getting a message like this:
_______________________________________________________________
Safari can't open the file "AdbeRdr 708_DLM_en_us.dmg" because it is still
downloading
_______________________________________________________________
What gives?
2) I poked around, and it seemed as though my friend is, by default, an
administrator. Why does she get this message, when she attempts to delete
desktop icons?
________________________________________________________________
The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient
priveleges for some of the items
________________________________________________________________
Yes, I tried to delete them one by one, also...
3) My stupidest questions, which I'm sure that I could figure out by trial
and error, if I spent enough time at her place...
What are some moron-friendly ways to eject a CD? Does Mac like some CD
types better than others?
Thank you in advance,

Don't know about the first issue. Sounds like an Adobe issue, or you're not
letting the file download fully.
On the second, she may be an admin, but if the ownership of the item is
assigned to "root", she (or you) can't delete it. Do a get info on the item,
and change the ownership to her username (her password may be required),
then delete the item.
There are at least four ways to eject a CD:
A. Click on the disc and do a CMD-E (CMD is the "Apple" key)
B. Click and drag the icon to the trash (which will turn into an eject icon)
C. Press the "Eject" key on the keyboard (in the upper right hand corner)
D. From the Finder, click on the disc, then under File, scroll to Eject.
A fifth way is to reboot the computer, and as soon as you hear the chime,
press and hold the mouse click until the disc ejects.
All in all, "C" is the easiest; you don't even have to select the disc; it
only works on the internal optical drive.

I didn't think Adobe Reader was necessary anymore since Preview will
open any PDF files.
Also if she is using an iBook the eject button is a function key and
you have to hold down the FN key and then press the F12 Key to eject. I
prefer to either drag to the trash (B) or Apple E (I still like the
Apple II key commands!)

However, there are uses for Adobe Reader. For one example: if you have
a PDF form, you can't fill it in using Preview. You have to use Adobe
Reader. (And yes, I know you can't generally save the form. It still
looks nicer than filling it out by hand ). |
