Post subject: Newbie: What Browsers are available on Mac. Do any of them support Windows Authentication?
Archived from groups: comp>sys>mac>system, others (more info?)

Hello,

I am Windows user and haven't worked on Macs. I would like to know what
all browsers are available for Macs (OS 9.2).

Do any of these support Windows Authentication?

Windows Authentication is a Microsoft proprietary technique that
validates accounts from the ldap domain. We set this option on the IIS
Webserver by checking the "Integrated Windows Authentication" checkbox
in the Directory Security tab of the Website Properties.

It seems that even IE5 on Mac does not support it!!

Any information (however crude) would be helpful.

Raj.

Mac OS 9.2 is dead. It was supplanted by OS X on March 24, 2001.
Think of OS 9 as the Mac equivalent of Windows 98 (except that it was
more useable than Windows 9Cool.

Probably not.

Mac IE of any variety is useless (I would argue that MSIE of any
variety for any platform is useless and worse, dangerous).

> Any information (however crude) would be helpful.

There is very little up to date software available for OS 9 and
earlier. The only current browser I know of offhand that might be
available for OS 9 is iCab (http://www.icab.de/dl.php).

Look at Opera which will allow you to appear to be IE to a Win server.
My SO uses that to access the system at her work. It's painless.

As far as I know, no Mac browser uses Microsoft ActiveX controls, including
Internet Explorer 5 (which only works in previous versions of the Mac OS, or
the Classic environment on OS X).

There are versions of the Mozilla browser for Mac which will run on Mac OS 9
natively. There are probably also Netscape versions which work natively on
OS 9.

Personally, if it is at all possible for you, I would suggest that you use a
Mac which supports OS X 10 or later, since you would have many more options
for browser support under OS X. (such as Firefox 1.5, Safari, Camino, and
several other Mac browsers). Firefox 1.5 is the best choice for
cross-platform support, if you want your browser on your Mac to be the same
as the browser on your Wintel machine.

Browsers?
Safari, IE, Netscape, Firefox, Mozilla, Opera, Camino -- I don't know
how many smaller ones.

LDAP has been supported, but I don't know how far back.

I don't understand why you would care to make sure anything worked
under 9.2.
Is it because your OS X solution is already working, or because you
didn't know there have been several major updates since then?

I thought Windows Authentication was the method of verifying that your
version of Windows was authentic. Obviously, that has no meaning in
this case.

Good luck getting IE for either 9 or 10:

http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.aspx

I knew the 10 version (IE 5.2.3) was gone; apparently both are.

Why not use a web standard method, instead of proprietary
windows garbage?

Shiira springs to mind, including a dashboard widget form for a
full browser within dashboard.

Also consider SeaMonkey, successor to the Mozilla Suite, successor
to Netscape Navigator. It is basically Firefox & Thunderbird and
more. A cross-platform browser, e-mail/news & more client. In
addition to Mac & Wintel, the Mozilla programs are also available
for Linux.

Thank you for posting that. As an avid fan of the Mozilla suite I
thought hope was lost after they announced it would die, I had not
heard of Sea Monkey.
http://www.mozilla.org/products/ does not mention it!

Actually, SeaMonkey is much like Camino, in that it is built for OS X, rather
than Windows or Linux.

It is a good suite, if you like suites. However, I personally like to keep
my browsing, email, and Usenet reading separated from each other.

Why? Don't you like having the equivalent of a carpenter's combination level,
trin-snips, and router?
