Post subject: Microsoft Document Connection

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel
This new product (part of Office 2008 SP2) is a long overdue relief for Mac users connecting to Sharepoint. But it's not perfect, here are some of the issues I've seen so far.
1. Doesn't seem to allow deleting documents from Sharepoint. You go to Edit - Delete and nothing happens.
2. If you check a file out using a browser you cannot check it back in from the application and vice versa even if the same user is logged into both.
3. You cannot edit document properties directly from the application. If you go to File - Properties it will open a browser and you'll need to check the file out there edit the properties and then check it back in - very clunky.
4. I love the drag-drop feature but when you upload multiple files that way it prompts you to upload and check-in each individual file which is a little annoying.
Anyone else seeing those same or other problems? |

Document Connection is far from perfect because it's a first attempt.
No, it will not let you delete items from SharePoint. That's by design.
The fact that you can select something and then choose Edit --> Delete
is really a bug.
The check-in/out makes perfect sense. Document Connection has its own
cache of items and it is separate from a web browser. It will have no
idea what you've done outside the application.
You're correct that you cannot edit file properties from within Document
Connection. Not a bug. It's simply not designed to do that.
Multiple check-in can be clunky. Haven't done this myself but I agree
that it shouldn't be per document.
The one thing MacBU left out is the Help --> Send Feedback link to
submit suggestions and requests. Submit yours at
<http://www.microsoft.com/mac/suggestions.mspx>.

Don't get me wrong, this application is a huge improvement but it could have been so much better.

Why would it NOT be designed to allow a delete from Sharepoint. It's such a basic functionality...say you upload the wrong document by mistake, why should you have to go to the browser just to delete it.
Same goes for editing document properties, it's something a lot of people do all the time when they are working with Sharepoint documents. Again, if this application is supposed to allow Mac users to effectively work with Office documents stored in Sharepoint why force them to go to a browser to do certain things. Not only that but why not show all the columns associated with a library in the application, not just the basic ones. |

I'm not saying these features will never be incorporated into the
application. "By design" simply means this is what it's intended to do
now. Developers have only so much time and resources. Nothing can be
complete or perfect the first time. They will release a product with
basic features first and then update/upgrade down the road.

Hi,
I'd like to join the discussion.
First let me say that I find it great that MS is finally doing something for Mac/Sharepoint users.
When trying to create a new file, it gives me an error: "ETags are not equal". Pressing the 'New File' button for the second time, creates an empty document based on 'template.doc' which is not the default template for the library.
Also, it seems that the tool does not like metadata. Some of my libraries have mandatory metadata. I receive some errors "Unable to retrieve meta data from URL", and then the document is checked-out. No way to check it in. Need to use File-Properties and do it via the webpage. I would really like to see metadata support, as this is a pretty important Sharepoint feature.
Also, dragging documents to a new entourage mail window does not work.
Just some suggestions. Great job! |

MS DC doesn't do a lot of other things at the moment. What is particularly nagging me is that you can't create new folders.
And I also frequently have the problem of not being able to access certain files. The filename for some reason gets arbitrarily truncated and I get a "File not Found" message when double-clicking on one. |
