Hello all... I got a MacBook a few months ago and it has been working
fine until recently. Lately, it has been just cutting off. Right in
the middle of any task it just goes, "click," and it's powered down.
It starts back up OK, but this problem is starting to worry me. It's
happened 5X in the past 2 days.
Anyone know about this? have experience with similar problem? willing
to guess/theorize what is causing it?
It happens with the charger on... so far. I'm running it now on the
battery to see if that will make a difference.
Thanks,
Bob |

Thanks everyone who responded... yes... my macbook has that exact
problem. there are two main theories on it: first: that there is a
faulty heat sensor on the motherboard that tells the computer it is
dangerously hot and so shuts it down, And second: a german IT man
traced the shut down to insulation on a wire that melts after a month
or two of heating and cooling and then shorts out causing shut down.
Either way, Apple is supposed to be good about fixing it fast. I'm
going to take it to an apple store tomorrow. I posted here after
holding for literally an hour on the apple tech line... they need to
hire a few more people. I hung up after an hour.
Thanks.

Take it back to where you purchased it. There is a known problem with
MacBook shutdowns. See:

If it's a known problem, maybe they should issue a recall. What happens if
this problem occurs outside of warranty? Will they still deal with it then? |

Why not just ASK Apple - either online or go to a store.....or use your
Apple phone support, which is exceptionally good....
They'll fix it...
Talking about it in this venue is entertaining, perhaps, but
accomplishes nothing. A better discussion would be to recount your
experience with Apple so that others could benefit from that experience.

Depends on how widespread it is. I know people with MacBooks who have
never seen the problem, and a couple of others who definitely have it.

Since no MacBook is near to being out of warranty, it's hard to say.
In the past, for example with some older iBook issues, being out of
warranty was not an obstacle. |

There's nothing to fix on my Macbook. I've heard of this particular issue
quite a number of times now, and now that Apple have acknowledged it, I was
wondering what the protocol would be if in any Macbooks showed signs of
this problem after warranty. It was more of just a passing curiosity than
anything else. |

It's a strange one. It doesn't seem to be exclusive to say just the earlier
Macbooks. It's going to be interesting to see just what exactly causes this
problem.

It depends. Apple has offered a variety of different repair programs
outside of the warranty period. Just check Apple's support web site to
see what's currently being offered for older products. |

I called the "local" apple store, which is an hour and a half drive
away from here in Santa Rosa... because I couldn't get through on the
AppleCare line (I hung up after (2) one hour waits on hold)... I
decided to just drive it over there. The repair guy/genius at the
store said they hadn't heard of the "Random Shut Down" problem, but
never-the-less believed me that apple has acknowledged the problem on
their site.. and took the MacBook to be overnight mailed to the main
repair place. The genius there saw that my white MacBook had yellowed
already on the palm-rest and space bar, and said he would ask them to
replace the deck on the computer while it was there, also. He said he
was required to tell me turn-around was 7 to 10 days, but it was
usually shorter. Then he asked if I had backed up all my data on the
machine because the techs might have to reformat my hard drive. I
hadn't done this, and will lose lots of email addresses and pictures
mostly. He said OK, then give him the password for the computer, and
if the techs had that they may not have to clear the drive. Not
wanting to make the drive again... I gave it to him in hopes that they
wouldn't erase my data. The genius said he didn't know what the repair
fix for this problem involved, and that they may not mess with my drive
at all, which I am hoping. I will follow up here when I get the
computer back.

Ah, yes - another "non-problem" or, perhaps more accurately, one of
those "what if" questions that is unanswerable....
Your curiosity would be best satisfied by merely asking Apple.....

I doubt they'd commit themselves by answering a "what if" type question.
But I wasn't expecting a definite or official answer from Apple or anyone
else. I was just curious.
Some people have experienced this random shut down problem - enough for
Apple to recognise it. And I was wondering what happens if this is problem
shows itself after warranty. My OP seemed reasonable at the time, now I'm
not sure. |

This is impossible to say because 100% of the computers that may
experience this problem are currently under the original warranty.
Asking Apple now would no doubt be a waste of time, but so is asking
here. If no one at Apple is willing to offer a helpful answer, how could
anyone on this newsgroup tell you what Apple would do in this
hypothetical situation?
Bottom line: wait and see. |
