Hello,
I will provide as many details as I am aware of, so sorry if some
vital information is missing, but hopefully I will have enough to get
some helpful feedback...
My friend was able to use her new MacBook (latest version of Tiger)
wirelessly at her place about 2 weeks ago. It was connected using DHCP
and a WPA password that she entered when connecting to the wireless
router. No problems until recently. The last couple of weeks she was
unable to connect wirelessly. All the network settings say she is
connected successfully, but when she opens Safari she cannot get any
pages to load. She fixed this by connecting directly in with the hard
line... but now that has stopped working as well... and thus the call
for help.
I am baffled and stuck and don't know what else to suggest. She
removed the password from the keychain and restarted her computer.
Reselected the wireless connection and entered the password.
Everything came up properly, but still no Internet connection through
Safari. Tried the direct connect and the status dot is yellow...
The only specifics (at this moment) that I know about the Internet
setup is that it's a cable modem wireless router... but could it be
something with the MacBook first? I know her 3 roommates (all PC
laptops) are able to connect fine at the same time she's not able to
connect at all.
Hope this makes enough sense to give some advice. Sorry for it being
so long.
Thanks in advance,
Nino |

The most likely case is that your friend has either no Domain Name
Server specified, or the wrong one. My first step would be to remove
power from the cable modem for 15-30 seconds and then reapply the power.
When the modem synchronizes with the head end, the proper DNS should be
available.
If your friend messed with the network settings, she may have to restore
them to their defaults.

This would happen if the router is configured to filter MAC addresses of
wireless clients and her computer's MAC address is not in the router's
allowed MAC addresses table. You might want to check to see if the
router makes use of a wireless client access list. If so, add her MAC
address to it.

Nino-
One possible explanation is that she is connecting to the router, but
the router has lost its connection to the internet.
The roommates' PCs might be connecting through a neighbor's wireless
system. If one of them is connected directly in with a hard line, can
it successfully get pages to load?
One thing to try is to connect the computer directly with a hard line,
and turn the cable modem off for minute or two. Then with the computer
connected and booted, turn the cable modem's power back on.
