Hi, I am in the marker for a MacBook or MacBookPro. I prefer the
smaller size of the MacBook for when I travel, but, the framerate stats
in FPS appear terrible. So I'm asking what people's experiences are in
this regard. I see from MacWorld that UT2004 has 18fps for the MB and
50fps for the MBP. Does this hold true in the games you've played. In
particular, perhaps under Windows via BootCamp.

TIA,

Why don't you just look at the specs? The MacBook Pro has an ATI Radeon
Mobility X1600 while the MacBook has a GMA950 shared memory gfx which is
barely as fast as a Radeon Mobility 9200. And you still ask why the
MacBook has a low fps rate?

Besides that: there still are issues with Windowsxp on intel Macs (i.e.
keys not working etc)...

Personally I would advise you to wait until Apple get their act
together and stop ripping people off by by charging big bucks for
deliberately crippled machines. Any company that fits a four dollar
graphics chip in a machine and then charges you one and a half grand
for the crippled beast is being very nasty indeed. Buy a pc.

That depends on where you live. I live in the UK and the cheapest
MacBook (the one with the Intel graphics) is £749. The cheapest
MacBook Pro (with an ATI mbility X1600 graphics card) is £1,349. Now
that might seem good value to you, but it certainly doesn't look like
good value to me.

It certainly will. The X1600 is not quite cutting edge any more, but it
is certainly capable of playing most modern games at sensible
resolutions. However, an extra £600 just to get a machine with a £100
graphics card seems a bit steep to me. My grandson needed a Mac for his
school work (because that is what everything else at his school is
required to use) and his parents could not afford £1,349 for the
MacBoo Pro, so they allowed Apple to rip them off for the standard
MacBook. Such a pity. With their massive purchasing power Apple could
have thrown a decent motherboard and a X1600 into the standard macbook
for probably something like an extra £80. Such a shame that they
didn't. I would have bought one myself if they had done that.

I know that the Pro is different in many other ways as well, but it
still seems like a lot of money. I can get a nice "Windows" laptop with
a 15.4 inch display and the new Intel dual core processor and the ATI
mobility 256 MB X1600 graphics card for £580, which is considerably
less than half the price of the MacBook Pro.

Now that Apple are using Intel processors they are in the position of
being able to procure the motherboards and everything else that goes
with them just as cheaply and easily as a anyone else (in fact because
of their buying power they are in a better position than most) and I
think that charging £1,350 for a MacBook Pro is nothing less than a
blatant rip off!

.. . . in fact, further to my previous response, I can get a laptop with
a 17 inch display, 1GB of DDR2 RAM, a 2. Ghz Intel Core Duo processor,
a mobility X1600 256 MB graphics card, a DVD RW Doube Layer Optical
Drive, 80 GB hard drive and built in wireless LAN and a 12 month
warranty for £699, which is £50 cheaper than the seriously crippled
standard MacBook with the four dollar Intel graphics and £650 cheaper
than the cheapest MacBook Pro!

Surely you're not still going to tell me that Apple are not ripping us
off?

application developper.

Considering Games, the macbook pro will make a great difference, as it
have a good '"real" graphic card (wich is the ATI x1600 mobility with
128 or 256mb, depending on the model). The Macbook only has an shared
intel graphic card, wich will not work with many games.
