Can an HP LaserJet 4ML be connected to an iBook with Mac OS X 10.4.3 via
USB? Is there an adapter to convert the 8-pin serial cable to USB? I've
had the 4ML for over 10 years, but it still works great, and I'd like to
be able to use it with Mac OS X. Thanks for any info.

I use a LaserJet 6MP with my modern Mac, and was able to connect it by
way of a Farallon iPrint LT. It's long out of manufacture, but I see
someone has two of them for sale on eBay for a buy-it-now price of $25
each. (Item 5821880064 if you want to take a look.) They're
sometimes hard to find, but they're often floating around the used
market.

The device has an RJ-45 Ethernet jack on one side, and a standard RJ-11
phone jack on the other. It was designed to interface with the old
Farallon PhoneNET networking hardware, which uses straight telephone
cable instead of the more expensive 8-pin cables Apple was selling.

So... for the adapter to work, you'll also need a PhoneNET connector
(or one of the many compatible knock-offs out there) plugged into the
printer's 8-pin port, and a simple telephone cord between it and the
iPrint LT. Another eBay search reveals LOTS of PhoneNET-compatible
connectors out there. One company's selling for $3 apiece plus $6
shipping to the US.

Another product you might consider is the AsanteTalk adapter, if you
can find it. Same basic idea, but the output is an 8-pin connector, so
you won't need the PhoneNet connector -- you'll just use your existing
cable. There area few of those on eBay as well, most well under $40.

Hope that helps! The iPrint adapter has allowed me to keep using my
6MP that I've had for almost ten years now. It's been working great.
It's a terrific printer, and with the adapter, I have no reason to get
rid of it until it finally dies or my needs change.

Ack, I just realized something: The 4ML uses the older Level 1
PostScript language, which Mac OS X doesn't support. So even if you
got it connected (reference my previous message), the Mac wouldn't know
how to talk to it, unfortunately.

Argh. So disregard everything in my previous message; I don't think
it'll work. Unless anyone out there knows how to make OS X speak
PostScript level 1?

Otherwise, I think you may be due for a new printer, unfortunately.
The good news is that they're *much* less expensive now than they used
to be; you can get a nice compact desktop model for well under $200
these days.

When price shopping, make note if the printer includes a "Starter
Cartridge" that's only maybe half-capacity if you're lucky, and take
note of how much replacement cartridges are, and how many pages they'll
print. (My 6MP cartridges are around $75, but I'll get nearly 4000
pages from one. Some cheap laser printers make up for it with really
expensive toner, just like the inkjets. Don't fall for it!)

It is PostScript Level 2 according to HP
<http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=b

I believe that there is another option for connecting the LaserJet 4mL.
Use a parallel to USB adapter. These are much more readily available
than the LocalTalk to Ethernet bridges.

I've had excellent results with the Belkin one:

http://tinyurl.com/6jumh

Take care though, someone said that Belkin makes another one without
the detachable cable. The one pictured is two pieces, the "Centronics"
parallel connector part and separate cable. The all in one version may
not work so well. I did try a generic version, they're about $20 and it
did not work well.

I bought the Belkin one on eBay a couple years ago for about $25.

I never had much luck with my adapter, I can't find it right now but I think
it was an all-in-one version from Belkin. It worked ok on my PC but was
worthless on my Mac, things like print one page and then lose connection to
the printer.

The main problem I had with the generic one (from Triangle Cables) was
that it never seemed to know when the printer was idle. I'd print a job
but then the next one had to wait till -something- timed out. There may
also have been some Postscript problems. I'm just glad I had the Belkin
one kicking around.

Ah, then I read some bad information; I dug deeper and you're right.
Nevermind the nevermind. Thanks!

I received a HP 4ML free. I purchased a Sabrent USB to Parallel cable for
$9.99 from Tiger Direct. I hooked the cable up to my G4 733mghz running
OSX 10.3.9 and OS 9.2.2 plus OSX 10.2.8. I booted up the computer and
the printer outputted "Welcome to Macintosh. It has been printing very
well for many months. I have noticed no problems other than not having
a operating manual to use with it to help me operate it more efficiently.

Just want to say that I bought the Sabrent USB to Parallel cable for the
HP 4ML printer to connect to my iBook with Mac OS X 10.4.3 and
everything works fine. Thanks to everyone for all your help and
suggestions.
