Post subject: MS Office programs won't launch or open
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>mac>office (more info?)

Version: 2004
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
Processor: Intel

Hi, I have been running MS office programs for a few years. Now for some reason they won't open or launch. Every time I try to open a program the icon bounces on the dock but the program won't launch. I tried to uninstall the program with the CD that came with it and I have the same problem. It looks like the program will open - but then nothing happens.
I have the current version of the MS Office 11.5.0. I have tried to reinstall the update and again, it just moves around on the dock, but won't open.

I see here on the forum that other people have this problem, but I don't see any responses which solved the problem.

I've checked the permissions and they seem to be correct. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. I have a feeling it has something to do with the recent update.

All of my other software programs open except for Quicken. It has the same problem. Could this be an issue with the operating system?

See this page for help:

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/troubleshoot/crashes.html#_1_bugs>

In case the above link does not work:

<http://tinyurl.com/5o57m2>

Testing in a new User will quickly tell you if the problem is system wide or
if it's your User's folder that contains the problem. Go to System
Preferences --> Create a New User in Accounts. Switch to the New User by
logging out/in or use Fast User Switching. Test Office there.

Hi Thank you for your post.
I created a new user account and the problem is there as well. I checked my fonts and I don't have the helvetica fractions. I validated them and there were no problems.

Is there any way to do a system restore on a Mac like you do on a PC?

Do an "Archive & Install"

Archive and Install

1) Insert the Mac OS X Install Disc and double-click the Install Mac OS X
icon.

2) Follow the onscreen instructions. In the pane where you select the
destination disk, select your current Mac OS X disk (in most cases, it will
be the only one available).

3) Click Options. If you want to save your existing files, users, and
network settings, select ³Archive and Install,² and then select ³Preserve
Users and Network Settings.² If you want to erase everything on your
computer and reinstall Mac OS X, select ³Erase and Install.² You canıt
recover erased data.

4) Click Continue.

5) Click Customize to select which parts of Mac OS X youıd like to install,
or click Install to perform a basic installation (recommended).

Once the install has finished, your system will be at whatever level the
disk you have is. So if your Install DVD/CD disk is 10.5.0, that's what
version of OS will be on your Mac. You will need to download the appropriate
Combo Updater from Apple's site to restore the system to a higher version.
After you run the combo, allow Software Update to download and install any
additional updates.

If this does not fix your problems you will need to do an "Erase & Install".
The last time I had to do an "Archive & Install" the only thing I had to
re-install was my Microsoft keyboard software.

Hope this helps!

Hi. I saw that you helped someone else with a problem similar to one that I
am having and I was hoping you would be so kind as to try and help me as
well. I am warning you though, I am not nearly as computer savvy as he seems
to be. I have been trying to help my mother restore problems with her
computer but to no avail. She has Windows XP on her PC but for some reason
her MS Word is not working. When I click on the shortcut it states that the
program is not installed. I am not sure how this is possible when all of the
other programs in the XP suite (Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) are working just
fine. If you have any suggestions as to how I can restore or re-install this
program I would be extremely grateful. Thanks for your time and any insight
you may have.

I know zilch, nada, nothing about Windows. Sorry.

Hi Rachel,

As Diane says, you should be posting in the Windows and Microsoft Office
threads, regardless I can offer some advice.

It sounds to me like a registry issue, and the easiest and quickest thing to
do would be to re-install Microsoft Word only, which can be done via the
Microsoft Office CD.

I'd wait to hear more responses though, I could be jumping the gun.
