I use both Shiva FastPathV's and Farallon StarRouters to bridge my
LocalTalk Segments to my local LAN. These are full blown Bidirectional
LocalTalk Routers, that also support MacIP tunneled in AppleTalk, and
are really nice devices if you need full BiDirection LocalTalk support.
The Asanate Boxes are really only partial Bridges and were really only
designed to pass Postscript, and Localtalk Printing packets when Ethernet
was taking over the networking hardware from LocalTalk. I started out
using LocalTalk, way back in the 512KE days, with a 3000 ft Segment that
connected two seperate Localtalk Zones. With the upgrade to Ethernet
for the two distant Zones, but no real technology, other than LocalTalk,
to connect the two areas into a common LAN, I got the FastPathv's to
do the Routing, and provide the connection via, the 3000 Ft LocalTalk
Segment. Then Tut Systems came out with the XL-4000 DSL Bridge/Router
Series of Boxes that would pass 10Mbs on a pair of unconditioned Phone
wires, the same as I had with the LocalTalk Segment, and installed a
Pair in place of the FastPathV's which brought 10BaseT speeds to the
entire LAN. The FastPaths were then reconfigured to provide legacy
connections to the MacSE's Localtalk Segments from the Ethernet
Segments on both ends of the Tut Systems link. I then acquired two
Farallon StarRouters to replace the Star Controllers that did the
LocalTalk Hub switching as part of the Legacy LocalTalk Segments,
as the StarRouter could do both the Star Controllers job as well
as the FastPathV's job, in a sing;e box. I keep one FastPathV running
to provide for a legacy Apple PostScript Laser Printer. Most of the
MacSE's are now retired, but there are still a couple that provide
support for legacy Software that will only run on MacOS 7.5.5, and I
keep a 8600/300, upgraded to a G4/800 and Mac OS8.6, to do the post
processing of that Data. I also keep a couple of Dual Boot MDD's
with MacOS9.2.2/OSX 10.4.11 should I need to get into the Legacy
software from those Olden Days.

Well the true use I need is to hook up the apple personal Laser 320
and a HP 4M printers to the blue and white G3. I think just burning a
CD_RW or Zip cartage is a must faster way to move data between the
macs (OS 8.6 and 10.3). I just networked the macs because I could but
the network is really only for the printers to be able to be used with
all the macs. |

So are the resistors at:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT...em=3800
Are they not what I want because they are 2 watt? Does anybody know
where I can find the ones I need without buying a gross? Or better yet
a source for the terminators instead? |

DJW-
Those would work electrically, if you could hook them up. The wires are
probably too heavy to crimp into an RJ-11.
Have you checked with Radio Shack? I would expect them to have 120 Ohm
resistors in a 1/4 or 1/8 watt size, in packages containing from 1 to 5
parts each. Also check their web site.
Other sources include Digikey and Mouser, but they may have minimum
orders. I usually save up a long list of needed parts before ordering
from them.

There is nothing "wrong" with using 2 watt resistors. You can file down
the leads if they are too fat to fit into the RJ-11 plug.
