| I need 2 Localtalk terminators for use with my asante talk box. I
can’t seem to find Farallon corporations home page to get the
terminators for the PhoneNet dongle box. Does anybody know of a good
source to get the terminators I need?

Go to your local RadioShack and pick up some 4 position RJ-11 phone
plugs and 120 ohm resistors. Insert the legs of the resistor in the two
outer positions of the RJ-11 and crimp.

Thanks for the heads up on what they really are. I will try and make
two I already have a crimper for RJ-11 plugs. |

Tom, Does it matter which leg of the resister goes on which side of
the RJ-ll plug? Also a few terminators that have have a ring around
one of the legs what’s that for? |

No, the resistor is symmetrical. The ring is just to have something to
grasp when removing a terminator from a PhoneNet module.

Tom, does it matter what watt the resisters are. Should I only look
for resisters that are exactly the same in color bands on them as the
ones I already have in use? |

It matters if their wires are too large to crimp in the RJ-11.

The resistors in my terminators are 120 ohm; that would be
brown-red-brown. The fourth band, the tolerance, doesn't matter for
this use.

Checking a PhoneNet box here, the resistors look like 1/4 watt.

It's just an impedance match; two watt way too large. Try 1/4 watt or
smaller.

I have a bunch that use 1/8 watt resistors. If your run is under 100
feet, you really don't need to terminate LocalTalk lines at all.
I still have some 3000 Ft LocalTalk runs around here, and they do need
termination, but for things that are close, it really doesn't matter.
Some LocalTalk Adapters are Self-Terminating as well.

I am using them on a local talk network with a Blue & white G-3 so I
need the Asante talk Box to get with the older network type that the
printer and older Macs are on. Asante says I need to terminate at both
ends I never tried it with out them. What might I find if I try them
and they really needed them? Data transfer errors? Might it have
intermittent problems? Or not even work at all? Does Asante know for
sure that I need them or just want a user to use them so they don't
get a ton or tech questions? |

brown, red, brown, gold = 120 ohms (12x10), 5%. The wattage is never
specified in the bands, only the physical size. Bruce may be right that
they're 1/8 watt, though 1/4 watt resistors may be easier to find. As to
whether they're really necessary, if you accidentally run the wire near
an EMR source (big motor or high-current switch, for example), the
resistors will help prevent packet corruption and consequent transfer
rate degradation.

Asante's just playing safe, since they cannot possibly know how far
apart, and what quality cabling, you may be using. I've never had a
problem with short cable runs, but I usually throw in the terminators
anyway (since I have them.) If you need extra PhoneNet/LocalTalk
connectors, I have a bunch lying around in the basement... |
