I've recently (*think* it's only started recently) been getting lots of
these messages using Safari or Netscape.
The problem, if that's what it is, doesn't seem to affect the web pages'
appearance or performance in any way.
Anybody explain the messages? What do they mean? How do they arise? Are
they a sign of something terrible I should try to deal with on my Mac?
TIA

Are you using a HOSTS file? |

Not knowingly!
I'd never heard of it until your post, so I googled. I've never
downloaded it, though I see there's a Mac version.

A hosts file is a standard networking tool.
It is a file your system loads with networking software that tells the
system what to do for SPECIFIC domains.
It's just a list -- nothing to do with platform, OS, or anything like
that.
For instance, for every pointer to a specific banner provider, just
doesn't load it. It could also have domains that are simply unwanted,
or which you want to point somewhere else.
Most of the time, you just have it point to your local address.
And that's why I thought you might have one -- that the string for a
particular address was not found. It was just a guess.
If you decide to use a HOSTS file, it is fairly easy to install, but in
a very specific way (because the Mac OS protects the place that it goes
from even an admin user). It's a non-destructive thing to try, if you
want.
Of course, you'd rather solve this message first. |

Thanks, Mitch.
Still getting the message, still don't know why, but it still seems to
have no effect on anything I can see!

Just found a thread on the Apple site discussing this:
http://discussions.apple.com/search.jspa?objID=f876&search=Go&q=localize
d+string+not+found
Haven't seen the solution yet, but you might take a look around. |

It's been a long while, but I think Pacifist is a tool used to extract
files from the installer; so you'll need to grab that online.
No word yet on how that language file goes missing, or what moves it --
it seems to be a very isolated event. |

Another post followed up:
Open the HD icon at the top left.
Go down to "System" (The folder with an X on it)
(Not "System Folder" with a 9 on it)
Then to the Library, Framerworks>WebKit.framework.
Pacifist can be found here: http://www.charlessoft.com/ |

I made a quick archive of that folder from my system:
I don't know if that is a wise way to solve this. Usually, the System
folder doesn't have any customized traits.
Grab it here:
ftp://mac@enternot.net:mac@ftp.enternot.net/English.lproj.zip
Unzip it, then put it here:
System>Library>Frameworks>
WebKit.framework>Versions>A>Resources folder> (here)
And we'll see if that error appears any more. |

Thanks to Mitch for so much effort.
Have followed your suggestion re Pacifist and English.lproj folder
(which was missing).
Will report back on absence/recurrence of the "not found" message after
a few days of use.

No problems for several days, after following Mitch's "easier solution"
advice.
Many thanks - annoying problem solved thanks to you! |
