Installed Leopard, Lexmark 2500 and HP 2100M stopped working.
Lexmark on USB results in any application blowing up due to a driver
problem.
The HP 2100M used to be easily accessible as a shared printer from
another Mac on our home network. I don't recall doing anything
special to get it to do so, but now no matter what I try, I can't get
my Macbook to see the 2100 anymore.
Any ideas about (1)?
What should I do about (2)? Is there a procedure -- like the old HP
"printer finder" tool or something -- that will allow my Macbook to
find the printer? I tried manually pinging the printer, and it's
there, but that's about it.
Help!

1 go to System Preferences/Print & Fax Preferences
2 click on the '+' button.
3 in the dialog box which pops up, do as you would have done to add your
printer using the old Printer Setup Utility.
Printer Setup Utility is dead, long live System Preferences/Print & Fax
Preferences.

I use an external hard drive to backup multiple computer drive images ( Mac
& Windows ). Time Machine wants the entire drive. Must I buy another backup
program to make an image of my mac drive? |

Perhaps you can help then. When I connect the external drive, it insists on
re-formatting.

FAT32. This drive has 3 or 4 disk images using a Windows program that I
really like. Don't want to change my system for Windows backups.

There's your problem. Time Machine _requires_ HFS+.

Time to buy a new drive.

Might try creating a disk image on the crumby FAT32 drive and direct
Time Machine to backup to the inside of that disk image. |

Good to hear. In any case, I expect it would happily work with a
partition, so long as it has the right kind of filesystem? Then the
OP could partition his drive with an HFS+ filesystem for Time Machine,
and whatever other filesystem he needs to support in a different
partition.

I tried using a .dmg image on a Tiger based file server, and Time
Machine would not acknowledge its existence.

That's interesting. I infer Tiger won't back up any types of mounted
drives. I suppose you can zip .dmg files you want backed up - they
shouldn't change. |

Bob, this is of great interest to me, so let me just confirm:
You mounted the disk image from the 10.4 server onto the Desktop of the
10.5 source, launched Time Machine, and it can't see the mounted .dmg as
a backup alternative, right?
Damn, I was hoping to use an automounting sparseimage on a secondary HD
as a way to limit TM's using up all the secondary's space without
actually partitioning the secondary. Any ideas why TM can't see the .dmg
volume? What if the server were 10.5? I know that shouldn't make a
difference, but who knows.
Thanks for the info.

Agreed.

Not necessarily. If there is plenty of free space on the drive, it is
possible to repartition it, to create an HFS+ partition on a drive which
uses Master Boot Record partition table (so it will be recognised by
Windows) and contains several FAT32 partitions.
Not sure what Windows would do with an HFS+ partition in this case
(hopefully ignore it). If it reports that it is damaged or unrecognsed
and offers to erase it every time the drive is connected, that would be
a major nuisance.
Leopard's Disk Utility can do some non-destructive repartitioning
(preserving partitions which haven't been modified) so it may be
possible to do this by splitting one partition into two (FAT32 and
HFS+), but I don't know if this feature works on an MBR volume. Erasing
an existing partition as HFS+ would be easier.
