What large *removable* storage devices are available?
Having just bought a Powerbook G4 with a built-in DVD writer I thought I
suddenly had an enormous storage capability, but having edited my first
iMovie movie I can see that the 4.7 Gbytes of a DVD isn't much. The 20
minute clip takes up around 5.5 Gbytes, so if I want to keep the actual
data files and not just the (video) DVD image file I'll need something
that lets you store more.
I know that the drive can burn to dual-layer CDs, but aren't these
pretty expensive and hard to find? Maybe I just haven't looked around
hard enough. Still, with 8 Gbytes or so, even though it's a lot better,
it's still not enough for storing a full movie project of an hour or two.
I'm going to buy an external Firewire hard drive (I've already ordered
an external Firewire 800/400/USB enclosure and will soon buy a large
hard drive to put inside) which I intend to use for video/audio
projects, but still I'd like some way to store my finished projects when
I'm done, just in case I want to re-edit some time later. |

Arild-
Yes, dual-layer CVDs are a bit more expensive. Compare it to the price of
removeable 100 MB ZIP disks. When they came out many years ago, they were
US$10 apiece. Today, if you can find them anywhere, they are still $10!
There is only one DL DVD source available here, but you get three disks
for $10.
My PowerBook is slightly older than yours, and does not have DL
capability. I purchased an external FireQire DL burner that seems to work
OK with the supplied "Lite" version of Toast. However, I ruined one of
the expensive DL DVDs when I first tried to burn it using the Mac burning
program under 10.4.3. I assume you won't have that problem with an
Apple-supplied DL burner, but you may find Toast has advantages.
