Archived from groups: comp>sys>mac>hardware>video (more info?)

Hi guys. I'm about to buy a new mac to use for desktop publishing and
digital video. I want a BIG screen - the biggest I can afford. Screen
real estate is everything to me.

In a perfect world, I'd get Apple's 30 inche monitor, but that won't
leave me enough money to get the G5 and other stuff I want. So that
leaves me with a few options:

1. Get Apple's 23";

2. Get the new Dell 24", which I hear is of similar quality and about
$800 Cdn cheaper;

3. Get some other monitor ... LCD? Plasma? There are so many options
out there, and I don't really understand the technology. I can see
myself spending up to $2000 cdn on this new monitor ... what's the
biggest and best (i.e. for quality, image, resolution) I can get?

Thanks for your help!

Buy 2 19" LCD monitors. This assumes you need room for lots of open
windows, and not one very large image or video you need to display.

The PowerMac G5 systems as shipped can drive 2 monitors. The PowerMac
Dual G5/2.5 I received last Thursday, has an Apple ADC connector, and a
DVI connector. Each port will drive a monitor. A DVI to VGA adaptor is
included if you need a VGA connection.

I purchased an ADC to DVI adaptor so I could use the ADC port. I now
have 2 18" LDC monitors attached to my PowerMac for the cost of a Belkin
ADC to DVI adaptor (already had the monitors).

You should be able to get 2 19" LCD displays for $300 each if you shop
well <http://dealmac.com>. Dell is often offering discounts on their
monitors if you watch dealmac.com for a little while.

2 19" LCDs would give you 2560x1024 pixels of real estate (1280x1024
each). The MacOSX software will seamless make the 2 screens look like
one display (except of course for the vertical plastic stripe in the
middle Smile

Then later, you can add an additional graphics card, and add 2 more LCD
screens, to increase your real estate even more.

If you're going to be doing video production work, you don't want an
LCD of any kind. LCDs are notorious for poor color accuracy. And the
colors often vary depending on your viewing angle.

Use a CRT monitor.

I'm using a 22" NEC CRT display on my Mac G4 system. I drive it at
2048x1536, which is more pixels than any LCD monitor (except for the
Apple 30") and enough to accurately render HD video.

The only thing to watch out for here is to make sure you have good
quality video cables. At the high frequencies that come with high
resolutions many cables have problems, resulting in ghost images. Good
cables (and the shortest you can conveniently use) will minimize or
eliminate this effect.
