Yeah, the IPA folks and the porter guys all have their little prickly
domains. I understand. The way my dad said rock wasn't music, and his
dad said jazz wasn't music and the way I say that rap isn't music.

Your brew-naming terminology may be harmless; I'm not so sure about your
shin-kicking Xmas tradition. Surprised

I always wondered what the effects of having Christmas in the middle of
the summer were. Tis the season. What you need is to buy them skates and
hockey sticks and toboggans, kick the little buggers out into the snow
until the turkey's cooked. Although, we're having a goose this year.

Here in North America, we use the word "beer" generically. No one ever
says, "I'm going out for a stout."

I've never drank horse piss, but being a former farmboy,
I've smelled it. And to me, _all_ beers have a similar smell.

Consequently, I've never even tried one.

I have dim memories of consuming way too much Lion Brown (if I have the
name right; if I don't it's because I consumed way too much of it) in
Queenstown once upon a time. It was very delicious.

My other favorite southern hemisphere beer is Australia's XXXX (pron:
four-x). I had it in Perth. Don't know if it's available everywhere in
the country. Besides being nourishing (!) on its own, the fact that it
has the same name as a brand of US condoms didn't hurt its appeal at the
time.

If I may respond here to a few others:

My understanding (and I'm no authority on the history of American beer)
is that the limp-dick taste of American beer stems from grain shortages
in WWII. The brewers substituted rice, which was available and cheaper.
Because of costs, they kept using rice after the war. They pumped the
savings into marketing. The rest is history. Anheuser-Busch's current ad
line for Bud Light is 'drinkability', meaning 'it tastes like water so
you'll want to drink it all night and it won't fill you up'. Oh, that's
so very satisfyiing...

Warren, you really like Rolling Rock?!? You do know that it's brewed
from mine effluent, don't you? That's why they serve it so cold; so you
can't taste it. And, yes, besides bottles, cans, and kegs, you can get
it in 'jugs'. Wink At least it has more flavor than Coors, who was sued
over calling Coors Light a 'beer'. Furthermore, you live in Ontario. Why
don't you drink Ricard's Red (hope I spelled that correctly)? I
discovered it in Sault St. Marie last fall. REALLY tasty!

Happy Solstice! Leave some beer out for Ole St. Nick,

I follow with interest what Americans think of American beer. Even
commercial Australian beer, considered by many to be much better with a
real taste, is not to be compared with the beers that came out of
Germany and even other European countries. Things are different now with
so much trade across continents, and small boutique local breweries.

One of the big factors in good beer is the use of malt and not sugar to
make up the alcohol. Sugar being very cheap here is used a real lot in
the mass market beers. You can hardly taste the malt. Even cheap beer
making kits operate on a lot of sugar basis. But the best beer is made
with no sugar at all, just the grain. Those who buy great European beers
or make beer from the grain never dream of using the normal kit beer or
even much drinking mass market beers (Fosters!).

One of the great British institutions is called "old purple tin" or just
"purple tin." It's Tenants XXX 10% ale, sold in (aha!) a purple tin and
enjoyed mostly by football hooligans. Powerful stuff. There's a band
called Alabama 3 (not to be confused with the American country band) who
have a whole song about it.

I just grabbed a six pack of Guinness Extra Stout. It's yummy! I
expected it to be stronger than the Sam Adams I had the other day; but
it pulls it off *without* an increase in bitterness, which is a good
thing IMO. Less or better hops, perhaps? All in all, not bad. : )

You went all these years without having had a Guinness? Wow!

Yep. Like I said, I stopped drinking beer when I was around 24 years old
in favor of mixed drinks, and haven't touched one since a week or so
ago. Before that, I mostly drank Budweiser. I'm not really all that
ashamed. I doubt I would have appreciated what makes a good beer good
back then anyway. : )

On the issue of temperature, I can tell you that Australians
traditionally have liked their beer real cold. I recall a short film
(sort of promotional for BP Australia) in which an Englishman is given a
lift in a cattle road train in central Australia. The truckie stops at a
roadside cafe/pub and the Englishman remarks on how cold the beer is.
The truckie replied that "Here we drink the stuff, not clean our teeth
with it!"

Truth is, the better the beer, the less cold you need to have it. A warm
Fosters *does* taste like horse piss (Wes accurately noted the smell
connection). But a well made richly malted beer can be enjoyed at less
than freezing point.

When traveling overseas, a 99.99% accurate rule of the road is that a
bar run by an Aussie will have the coldest beer in town. Very valuable
knowledge in the tropics.
