I'm at wits end here. Applets work fine in Firefox, but not in
Safari. "Enable Java" is checked in my Safari's Preferences >
Security, and there's a "Java Applet.plugin" in Library/Internet
Plug-Ins.
Still, according to what I see at
http://www.w3.org/People/mimasa/test/object/java/clock
my Safari can't handle Java applets at all; all I see is the "cup
of coffee" graphic that indicates that Java is not available.
(FWIW, the page above displays correctly when I use Firefox.)
I've run out of troubleshooting ideas. What's the next thing to
do to get Java to work with Safari?
Thanks!

Java is not the same thing as JavaScript. Since the page you cited loads
fine for me (and for you in a different browser), my first guess is that
you haven't got JavaScript enabled in Safari. That's right below the
Enable Java checkbox on the Security page of the prefs window.

Sorry, but JavaScript has nothing to do with it: if I disable
JavaScript in Firefox, and restart it, the page above still loads
fine, and the applets work.
(At any rate, yes, both Java *and* JavaScript have been enabled
all along.)
Don't get me wrong. I never questioned that Safari supports Java
applets. So knowing that yours is working fine is besides the
point. The fact remains that the Safari running *on my machine*
is not handling Java applets, and what I'm trying to do here is
figure out how fix this.

There is one site I go to with Safari this happens on. Try clicking
somewhere in the window and see if all of a sudden what you've been
missing appears. Happens to me consistently on this one site.

I apologize. I was apparently reading before my eyes were fully awake.
What happens if you click the button that shows up here:

Sorry, I should have mentioned in my original post that before
posting I had in fact visited this page, clicked the "Got Java?"
button, and that the dialog saying "Congratulations! You have
Java!" came up... :/

The coffee-cup icons appear for a few seconds on this site even if Java
is working, btw... I assume you left it long enough to be sure the
clocks really weren't going to appear? (They do for me.)
Anything interesting happening in the Activity Window (Cmd-Opt-A)? |

For me, (Safari 2.0.4 - OS X 10.4.8 - DSL 1.5) the page itself took
comparatively long to show up and there were several seconds, maybe
10-15, with the coffee cups, before the clocks showed up.
Is your connection comparable or better? Is it just slow-load and and
eager eye?
